I remember not being able to wait for Wednesday nights and SEC basketball. I was in junior high, I believe. Glory days of LSU basketball. I guess I remember a lot of people putting the blame on Brown for not winning a lot more with this team, but like I said it was so long ago, I can't remember why they could never get over the hump.

What I thought. But I guess with recent shortcomings in the program, the past always looks a lot better than it actually was.

Because they lost to a final four bound Georgia tech team that consisted of Kenny Anderson the number 2 pick in the draft Dennis Scott number 4 pick and Brian Oliver who was picked in the second round.

Chris Jackson was great Shaq was young and Stanley had all world potential but was a head case. They came up against a more experienced and talented Georgia tech team. Nothing to be ashamed of. We were very talented but so were they

ETA they also had another 1st round draft choice Malcom Mackey.

The problem was only getting a 5 seed.

But they had the core of that lineup for a few years, including Clarence Caesar and Jamie Brandon in 91-92. There was a window.

Is it because of that zany dude, Bobby Knight saw when he leaned over and looked at the LSU MBB bench, in the Final 8 at the Rosemount in Chicago, 1987??

I think it was William Buckley Jr, who referred to Nixon's unique syndrone, the "Brinksmanship Syndrone!" Buckley said about Nixon (paraphrase): UNLESS HE IS FACING AN IMPENDING DISASTER, WITH HIS BACK TO THE WALL, HE CANNOT FUNCTION TO HIS OPTIMUM LEVEL.

This flawed and frenetic psychological idiosyncracy, was Dale Brown too. He had to have THE WORLD AGAINST HIM, to function, and that's why he had so many mediocre years, with more than adequate talent.

Bobby Knight also said, with the aforementioned roster, "We would have been illegal!"

The Coaching fraternity thought of Brown, as the ultimate odd duck, and BK understood Brown foibles, and made fun of it.

Yeah but the eye popping lineup namely a trio of Chris Jackson Shaq and Stanley roberts was only together for that one year and they ran into a very, arguably equally, talented team in Georgia Tech. We definitely should have gone farther with shaq but sometimes the tourney format screws you. Just like we should have gone farther with thorton but we got screwed with UNC in the second round.

True. I remember that game. The Tigers wore them out in the first half. They looked like monsters.

The second half was a different story.

Still, I'd take those days than this slop.

Shaq was a true freshman and Stanley a redshirt freshman. Had this team stayed together, they would have been amazing.

Times were different then. That was a very young team while college basketball had a lot of very experienced players. In this day and time, that team could win a championship.

As for this. You want to know how many Final fours florida has? 4 Syracuse 4. Uconn 4 Arizona 4 NC state 3 Texas 3 Wake forest 1.

You want to know how many LSU has?......4. Same as Cuse. Same as UCONN. Same as Zona. All those are "basketball schools". Hell we have as many FFs as 2 tobacco road schools COMBINED. So pardon me if I think our past was pretty damn good.

To me, the pinnacle of that season was the LSU/G-Town game. Truly legendary, despite the tournament loss later. The Loyola Marymount game was also epic for so many reasons.

Tournament success aside, LSU basketball will never be as electric as they were when O'Neal played here. People (not LSU fans) used to follow them around from city to city like the Grateful Dead or something. Backboards were destroyed. Thunder dunks were thrown down. It was bliss.

Still couldn't beat Arkansas, though. Dale. I'm looking in your direction.

This is something I have always said and I stand by it. If you can't win a championship with that team you can't win a championship period.

I lot of people here don't realize it as they might not recognize ALL of the names... maybe before their time or whatever. But that team had more talent than any other college basketball team in history. I would be a ton of money that that team never is equaled in talent.

Maurice Williamson and Vernel Singleton are probably the least remembered of that group, but both we kick arse. Best team ever assembled no doubt.

Agreed. Most people who ask this question fail to realize this. Most just like to criticize Brown, only to prove their ignorance.

You'd lose.

The 1982 Heels had Jordan, Worthy, AND Sam Perkins. And I'd argue the 1984 team was more talented though less successful... lose Worthy but gain Kenny Smith and Brad Daugherty. There were some loaded teams back then.
