Alexander, a highly touted rookie out of St. Thomas Aquinas, played several series in the win over Southern Miss while coaches purposely sat junior college transfer Travonte Valentine. Valentine did not practice well enough leading up to the win over the Golden Eagles, and he's still behind, Orgeron said.

“He’s a little bit behind in his technique," the coach said. "Ed Alexander is ahead of him. Right now, he’s on the third team. A lot of times, the third-team guys don’t get a lot of reps. If so, he may get some reps, but I see (starter) Greg Gilmore and Ed Alexander getting more reps than him.”

Ed was rated higher as a recruit. Maybe he is just really good.

All I know if Gilmore is garbage. Watch him at nose on running plays and he is pushed 5 yards back almost every time. When we get to bama, ark, and Florida, this will be a huge issue.

Sounds like he needs to stay out of the mess hall and get in the gym.

I honestly think everyone on here is looking into this too much. TV will be fine.

When there are talented guys behind you you can't take days off. It's like those old Miami teams, nobody wanted to come off the field because they didn't know if they would ever get back in.

He can redeem himself. All he has to do is keep collapsing the O/L and stay in the Ole Miss backfield all night long. Bingo!

Hey Travonte'......just do it!

When so much bigger than everyone, one can often get by on natural abilities

Staff sees an ability to improves. Hopefully valentine will take advantage of the opportunities presented to him

I think there is a lot more to this than what is written apparently.

There have been a couple of threads started here that have stated that Valentine disrespected one of the coaches "supposedly it was Pete Jenkins" at a practice and that is why he was benched for the entire game last week and if this is true then probably why he was demoted to 3rd string.

I have no clue if the rumor is true but to go from this summers comments from teammates and coaches "he is no blockable, he eats up double teams" etc.... to demoted to 3rd team, sounds like there maybe a lot of truth to the rumors.

I know the credentials of the guys choosing to play Gilmore:

Ed Orgeron: An accomplished DL coach who is the interim HC and trying desperately to win the position on a permanent basis

Pete Jenkins: one of the greatest, most accomplished DL coaches in the history of football and who doesn't give a sick rat's arse about anyone's opinion because he is NOT trying to win the job permanently..

Neither of these dudes are playing anyone that they are not convinced give LSU the best chance to win.

So, you rate Gilmore as "garbage". Please tell me what are your credentials so I can weigh the evidence more appropriately.

TIA

Just because he is starting doesn't mean he's the best on the team or even good. Valentine was benched for poor attitude/practice. The only other option is a true freshman in Alexander who barely qualified late.

I think he could have been over hyped somewhat. Combine that with the rumors of being out of shape and having a possible attitude problem and we see where it landed him.

Hope he can turn it around.

Orgeron has a practice standard that Valentine is not meeting. It doesn't matter who you are....you gotta bring it when practicing for this coach.

UIltimately, this demotion is good for Valentine and the program as a whole. Folks are gonna start working their asses off to stay on the first team.

frick no. He's lazy with a shite attitude(allegedly). This is 100% on Trevonte Valentine and Trevonte Valentine alone.

Where is the "overhyped" evaluation coming from? Valentine has been terrific when he has played. He hasn't played as much as expected but that may be due to attitude or practice habits or whatever. He is a dominant NT, though. His performance is not "overhyped".

Classic example of fans liking one player no matter what. players should EARN playing time. TV needs to pull his head out of his a$$!

Of all the kinds of attitude those guys had, this was one of the more virtuous one's. They looked forward to competing with each other and the opponent.

That's it, nothing cures bad impressions more than excellent results. He has to make the most of every chance though... and that includes in practice. It is a never ending interview with this staff.
