Honest question: what is Alleva's 'specialty'?

I think I read on here about him coming from Duke? Is that right?
Then is he a basketball guy? And shouldn't he be fired by now if that's the case?
I just don't understand how the program could be run so poorly. I don't think he handled the football situation well either; honestly think things kind of fell into place.
You could probably place just about any kind of executive from any position into his role and they'd have more success.
What do we have to lose?

Well he didn't hire coach K.

Convincing universities to hire him.

He's as much of a "basketball guy" as you and me. Coach K had been at Duke LONG before Alleva's arrival. All Alleva had to do with the basketball program was whatever Coach K told him to do.

His first basketball hire, Trent Johnson, was a "miss". That would be forgivable IF he would have been proactive in letting Trent go when it was clear he wasn't a good "fit" for LSU. After following up a SEC championship with three losing seasons (at least in SEC play going 2-14, 3-13, 7-9) and no hope on the recruiting trail, it was clear Johnson wasn't going to work. However, Joe didn't make a move. Johnson actually left on his own, after the Final Four, which put Alleva in a bind hiring the new coach. That, of course, led to the hiring of Jones...who clearly, even at the time, was not the guy who was ever going to get LSU to a championship level. Unfortunately, Jones has lived up to every expectation. Good recruiter, horrible coach.
Joe had a chance to fix the mistake after last season. But again, he's a day late and a dollar short (just like all of his major coaching decisions at LSU). This season could have been salvaged with a coaching change. Instead, his inaction has crashed the program once again, leaving the next guy to build almost from the ground up.
LSU needs an AD with foresight and the ability to be proactive. Unfortuantely, we are in this position because the guy above Joe (Alexander) doesn't give a shite if LSU wins on the field/court, etc. Therefore, there is no one above Alleva to hold him accountable except maybe the BOS, who are Jindal guys with another one of Jindal's guys (Alexander) as the President.

Program continues to make money and is not in any major NCAA trouble so I would say it isn't run poorly. The things Alleva does well are things that the fans don't pay attention to. Raised money to upgrade facilities and helped non revenue sports become relevant and in some cases national contenders. His basketball hires have been bad no doubt. If LSU boosters aren't going to be willing to pay big bucks for the next coach they will continue to be because I don't think he has the skills to go get that young up and comer for a little cheaper. Coach O is at a wait and see point right now. Looks good so far but won't know for sure until the fall.

Finances and politics.
Not sure if you guys are aware but there is more to an ADs job than just hiring coaches tow in games (especially in Louisiana).

Joe is a Search Man.
Best in the business.
Hence, Joe "I AM the Search" Alleva.
You saw his craft up close in the months after Les Miles was fired and dozens were interviewed, researched, fingerprinted, worked out...
Joe will remain a Search Man until F. King tells him he's something else.

He's a pretty casual douche if you ever get a chance to interact with him. I'd suspect he plays the politics game pretty well

You're not getting the job at LSU if you don't

The "program" is making bales of money. That is what the BOS want the AD to do, its not complicated.
