Honest question... why did Simmons play college BB?

I admit to not knowing the details as bb is not my thing.
But what did Ben Simmons stand to gain by one year in college?
Why not go straight to the pros with all of the hype?
Did he actually gain or lose anything by not going pro last year?
Ill add that I've watched the past few games only, and he is good, but I question if he deserves the hype?? I've seen great players, and they take over games when they need to....

tbh he could easily have gone pro in europe or somewhere for a year, gotten paid, and got to avoid this shite show

Going to Europe for a year, I think he would've lost out on publicity and a chance at a big endorsement payday.

Proof positive that you don't need to go to college, you just need to wait 1 year after high school before entering the NBA draft.
Given that Simmons had no desire to do the college thing, and that he had the connections in place to go play in Australia without much problem, you have to wonder if he would have gone there instead, if he could do it all over again.

It's more so proof of how bad the college game is. In a draft of 60 players, only 10-15 end up being worth a damn.
