In the Tex Maule book "The Linebacker," a character makes a passing reference to the Chinese Bandits defense at LSU. Can someone tell me about that?

wut?? - you;d need to tell us what you know of the Chinese Bandits to keep us from going over 6 decades of progression.
- began when the NCAA rules did away with unlimited substitution = anyone who is not on the field at the start of a quarter can only make one appearance in that quarter. Those who were on the field at beginning of a quarter can be taken out and then re=enter in the same quarter.
- Dietzel established 3 units:
== WHITE team = really the 'first team' in today's vernacular - they start the game and normally go on the field at the beginning of each quarter thereafter. Can be substituted out and put back in in that quarter
== GO team = go on the field when Tigers on offense when a substitute is warranted
== CHINESE BANDITs = go on field when Tigers on defense when a substitution is warranted.
Name comes from a comic strip of that era = Chinese Bandits was a name for a vigilante group seeking justice - known as the 'meanest critters around.'
them's the nitty gritty
edit = thanx for the links in other posts - makes for a good relaxing visit back to my favorite year of all time.
knew a couple of the Bandits personally - played against one of them (Mel Branch from DeRidder) in high school (Leesville) = he ate my lunch all day
ahhhhhh - the memories

I didn't really want Wikipedia's take... I was hoping for a Tiger Rant perspective. But thank you anyway.

How do you think it would be all that different?

Wikipedia has a more professional and less fun tone than posters on Tiger Rant.
