The LSU bullpen is getting some much-needed reinforcements — and an old friend is coming back to help out in the midweek.

Freshman right-hander Zack Hess is moving to the bullpen on a “permanent basis,” LSU coach Paul Mainieri announced Monday.

Coaches were pleased with Hess’ performance as a midweek starter so far this season, and his future is in the rotation, but as far as this season goes, he’s too important an arm to not have available full time on the weekend during Southeastern Conference series.

“At this point, he’s too valuable to burn him up in the middle of the week,” Mainieri said.

As a result, Johnny Wholestaff is making its comeback to the midweek games. Todd Peterson will start on Tuesday night against Grambling, Mainieri said, with LSU likely to use as many as “nine or 10” pitchers through the course of the game.

We need for Southern Miss to stay hot, if so, they will host a regional and LSU could be sent there as a 2 seed.

But seriously good move to get another power arm in there for situational pieces.

Hess' numbers out of the bullpen are abysmal. Obviously that can improve if he's only focusing on relief and not trying to figure out how to be both. But he's much better as a starter.

How does this address the fact that the team collectively can't hit themselves out of a wet paper bag right now?

Paul should worry more about fixing the offense than the bullpen.

I think Hess needs to go to the bullpen because we have a locked in #3 and they need the depth.

I think Slaughter needed to be benched because he was pressing way too hard at the plate and "K"ing even more than usual.

So I agree with the moves PM made here...

But why the hell does he have to BS about the reasoning?

He tried to say that having a 4th starter has hindered bullpen development... WTF??? Our starters have thrown 153 of 258.2 innings this year. That isn't some exorbitant amount. It averages out to 5.1 innings per 9. It's not like the bullpen hasn't gotten enough work. Why say that crap?

Then he said that Slaughter was benched because of his defense... Think about that for a second. Slaughter's defense has been great and imo wasn't seeing a drop off. He still has zero errors and made a couple ++ plays the last couple games he played. Why is it not okay to say he was benched because he hasn't even been hitting balls in play?

The real question is why do the BR media just lap up everything he says instead of questioning his silly excuses?

Ding Ding ell gets it

Make no mistake he's not someone who I would bring in with runners on just yet but he can eat up innings and offset the loss of Norman to an extent.

If he's to be a starter in the SEC next year he needs more work than midweek starts.

Yea that made no sense Slaughter is the best first base man LSU has had in years.

Because they'll get blackballed if they don't. (i.e. morning show)

Great move by LSU to do that. Now we have Andy Cannizaro on the BR airwaves talking up his program at Miss State. Going to be hard to fight off Cannizaro in recruiting battles.

Gotta make sure that starting rotation is razor thin once post season gets here. If post season gets here.

Well at this point, you can't afford to drop anymore mid-week games to crappy in state schools, so...

I'm fine with moving Hess to bullpen but they should just let Peterson be the 4th starter and see how he does. He's been shitty out of the bullpen anyway

well, he has to do something different...ole saying "if it aint broken", well, it's broken...hopefully, his idea to fix it works...
Slaughter needed to watch, but not because of his defense...
Kind of reminds me of CLM's press releases, vague & not entirely truthful...

Who needs to win midweek games anyway? All we have to do is go 20-10 in conference games. That's all, seems pretty simple.
