I reject the premise that you need 3rd and 4th year QBs to field adequate offenses. That's a cop out. Lee was a RS Frosh during his trial by fire, JJ was a Sophomore (though he'd started in the bowl game the year before), and AJ is a sophomore (who started in the bowl game and led a game winning drive in the season closer). All had at least a year in the system. JJ was adequate (but regressed) in an otherwise anemic system, Lee was pretty bad in a somewhat more productive system, and AJ may be the worst QB playing in the worst system that many of us have ever seen.
The "youth" crap is a cop out. RS Freshmen and Sophomores are leading FBS teams all over the country. We don't need Heisman performances to win games.

“One thing I have to say about Coach Miles and LSU recruiting: very thorough,” Crowton said. “I’ve been at a lot of places. Coach Miles is very thorough. He knows what he’s looking for. That’s one of his great strengths.” The system works, Crowton said. After all, LSU signed two top-ranked QBs (Perrilloux and Shepard), and a third was committed until the very end (Kiel).

This is, by far, the exception, not the rule.

Negatiger [on]/off
Looking at the offensive production of last years players in the NFL this season is mind numbingly frustrating. The talent was there, but the execution was not.

At one position, yes. But I think to say that youth team-wide is not a factor is asinine.

May not be the rule, but why we have NEVER hit on one of them....
Manziel, wanted to play QB for LSU,
we said NO QB
Prescott, wanted to play QB for LSU,
we said NO QB
Sheppard, wanted to play QB, we said NO QB ..receiver
Better Recruiting-Better Coaching = Better QBs
makes one wonder..what do we really know about evaluating and coaching up QBs

I was writing specifically of the one position. Losing 15 starters will obviously have an impact.

That seems like a backhanded compliment.

i disagree with this. yes, there are young quarterbacks who are thriving around the country, but there always have been. that's anecdotal. what is less common these days are quarterbacks who will stick with a school if they aren't playing, so there just aren't as many at this position who are being groomed long enough to either develop within their school's system or late-blooming (relative to their college career) into their potential.

It is common enough that no one would consider it an anomaly. Check out the FBS starters this year. There are several underclassmen, and several others who started (and were productive) as underclassmen.

Uh i'm gonna need to see some proof of this. I've never read or heard this anywhere.

the commentators have said that he (his people) contacted LSU after Colorado.
going by that info.
same w Prescott
if I remember the commentators said:
he committed to Texas, then left to Colorado or Colorado St ..changed his mind, Texas was contacted.. did not want him back, ---according to the commentator, LSU was contacted - not for QB, he went to A&M
can not attest to any of this, but it sounds like Manziel

I guess this depends on what you consider common versus an anomoly.

Nine teams in The Associated Press’ top 10 this week have starting quarterbacks in their third, fourth or fifth years of major college football. Ohio State is the exception, with a starting QB in his second year after senior Braxton Miller was lost for the season in August with a shoulder injury.
Did you read the entire article? Crowton gives some very well reasoned insight into the situation and states that

And no that we'll ever now, but the coaches were way too stubborn to ever give Shepard a real chance at QB in a CORRECT offense for him (spread option).

It's been posted before that he grew up with an affinity for LSU. Not sure how credible that is. Judging by what's available on the free recruiting sites, I don't think there was ever really much to LSU recruiting him (or vice-versa).
