You have to use a computer or smart phone or tablet to control the chromecast.. Doesn't mean you are watching on both but it does mean you have to have both in order to work.. There is no remote with chromecast.

If that may be an issue.. Say you don't always have a device handy, I really recommend the firestick from Amazon or the roku stick..these both come with actual remote controls and you don't need a device at all..

I can watch using the Watch ESPN app on my phone and my Roku, but not on my ESPN app on Xbox One. SEC Network + doesn't seem to be on the Xbox One version.

I'm leaning towards getting the Roku. You ever have any playback issues - buffering - or anything like that? How long have you had your Roku?

I would personally recommend the roku or fire tv stick.. because you have the option to use the provided remote to control it, or you can still use a device to control it. The roku stick is what I have an I really love it. There is a free app you can get that is an actual remote too. The roku has a ton of free channels and even private channels you can add online. The chromecast has to have a device to initiate it, and then this may not be good say if your devices battery is run down and you can't charge it.. etc..

The firestick is nice because it is a little cheaper and it's newer with probably better processing (not that this is even needed)

You won't have playback issues as long as your wifi is good. There is a more expensive roku that allows you to plug in an ethernet cord, but the stick is great enough.

Also,
If you have movies or videos on your computers hard drive and like to watch them to your tv you can get the channel/app PLEX on your roku or firestick and stream your entire movie collection wireless in fantastic HD.. all without any cords.. Plex has a tremendous interface too. I can't state enough how freaking awesome this is.

Any ways, I hope you are able to get one. You will absolutely love it, as long as your wifi is good.

Fire TV stick
Only $40

Roku Streaming Stick
$49 or $39 Refurb

I don't think you can go wrong with either!

Few years. It's the first one that came with Angry Birds.

I may just do that. I am saving 40 something bucks from not having to buy Geaux Zone for baseball season.

You cannot close the app. It has to still run. It can be running in the background but if you close it it will kill the stream.

To clarify, I bought a Chromecast Saturday and got it all set up to watch the games. I was streaming from my iPhone, and I was able to close out the WatchESPN app and still stream with no issues. It surprised me, because I figured my battery would drain quickly.

I have one of the older models of Roku. My daughter set it up for me and I have watched every game since Direct TV reached an agreement. With most devices you still have to have a provider and you must give them your ID and password. For some reason, I have to reset during games because it tries to reload and just pauses. It only takes a few seconds to reboot but it is still a little annoying.

I am going to go with Roku. I went to Amazon to look at the fire stick and they have this message "In stock on March 10, 2015" and I want to use it this weekend.

When I check my internet on speedtest.net it usually averages between 59 and 62 so it's pretty fast.

Thanks for all the information.

Ah your internet is beast. Just make sure your wifi has enough range and has a good signal around it.

And yeah I did not realize the fire tv was not in stock until then! That is a bummer. The cool thing with amazon ordering though is if you don't like the product they are so easy to return with.. so if you didn't like your roku stick you could easily return it for the fire tv.

One more tip to know is that these sticks plug in HDMI of course, but they are powered via USB. So usually the back of your tv will have a USB input you can use, or you can use your set top box's USB input. Also they come with a power adapter or you can use say like your iPhone's usb power plug in.. but this is not necessary.. However, I have found when I use these sticks on older tvs (even with the hdmi) I have better success using the actual plug into an outlet over relying strictly on USB power.. so if your stick is slow then consider using the actual adapter.. Otherwise you should have no issue just plugging in via USB.

Just giving a heads up there just in case.

This is true, but I didn't know if it was for others haha..

Check this, I was casting from my sister's iphone to our chromecast.. Well she left to go to the store with her phone.. and the cast never once stopped. LOL.. maybe it just needs to first be initiated.. then nothing else matters.. Pretty wild stuff..

and Netflix too.

Run app, start watching, cast it, then use your phone as normal.

I completely powered down my IPhone to test my chromecast and it kept on working. So the IPhone is only needed to initialize the streaming.
