We're obviously replacing a ton, but my goodness at the talent that's potentially replacing these guys.

I'm talking (Rivals ratings)...

1 Top 250 DE starting (Montgomery or Aghayere)
2 Top 100 DT starting (Nevis, Davenport)
2 Top 100 LB starting (Baker, Francois)
1 Top 100 and 1 Top 250 CB starting (Peterson, Eugene)
2 Top 100 S starting (Taylor, Loston)

7 Top 100 starters and 2 Top 250 starters

Ball's in your court, Mr. Chavis

Here comes the negatigers to talk about how it doesn't matter because our coaches won't develop them

lots of raw talent. going to need another year under their belts to be a top 10 defense IMO. 2011 should be very stout on D.

How different is that with the players leaving?
Were they all not Top 100/250 coming out of high school?

Peterson and Sheppard will still be the best defensive players LSU has. Ya'll lost a lot this past season and will be asking a lot just like us from the young players. Big shoes to fill trying to replace 2 and 3 year starters at any position.

Aghayere hasn't shown much in the chances he's been given. Eugene has been alright. Taylor and Nevis were pretty good. Baker was a beast in his limited playing time. Peterson... I don't think I even need to say anything with him. The others haven't played a down or have done so little for varying reasons as not to be able to be judged right now (Francois).

Strict recruiting rankings aren't the best evaluator to prove the point. Just remember - most of the talent leaving LSU now was in this position prior to a disastrous 2008 defensive campaign.

I do agree with your conclusion (that it's on Chavis), but the evidence is suspect.

Starters leaving on defense...

DE Levingston - Neither 100/250 (Being moved to DT this year, lesser role)
DE Alem - Top 100
DT Woods- Top 100
DT Alexander - Neither 100/250
LB Riley - Neither 100/250
LB Coleman - Neither 100/250
S Jones - Top 100
CB Hawkins - Neither 100/250

So we only lose 3 Top 100 players and 0 Top 250 players. Going by ratings we're upgrading on talent pretty big.

Would we be wrong, or is it only the offense?

The top of the depth chart is where the problem lies. The Head Coach does not know what he is doing.

You're leaving some stuff out. Peterson was Top 10 not just Top 100. Wasn't Jai Eugene a 5-star as well? (that really doesn't matter cuz he hasn't done well.)

Also, Al Woods was 5-star DT not just Top 100. Chad Jones was Top 20 and 5-star, too

way too logical for this board. bbb...didn't you know that LSU is three deep with AA talent at every position and that the only reason we don't win 'crystal' every year is because our staff can't 'coach them up?'

i disagree. a lot of young guys have been contributing in the secondary and d line for the past few seasons. nevis was our best dt and he's back. edwards was the most effective DE off the bench. add in brockers and davenport to the mix inside. montgomery as a pass rusher. levingston has a lot of experience at DE. the lb corp is the only young group that lacks experience. sheppard at middle is as good as any returning lb in the SEC. baker really has not seen much game action. and really nobody else has contributed. secondary is in good shape.
