Curious how that all works , I’m sure it’s the same as every other sport

I'd assume there was language in Wes' contract that voids a buyout for a promotion. Would be different if he were going over as pitching coach

Depends on his contract. He might have a clause that says he can leave for any HC job for free.

Seriously doubt it. Wes had the leverage in the contract

^ All three of these comments are spot on. There are a lot of sharp people on the rant.

I know nothing about his contract but I'd be willing to bet money that he didn't have a buyout for a promotion (if anything at all).

Go back to the MLB no buyout. Become a Head Coach no buyout. They should have put a clause that said, "No buyout for Non-SEC Head Coaching Job. SEC Head Coaching position the buyout is 100%."

I bet there is a buyout clause, but exemption for taking a collegiate head coaching job

His whole reason coming back to college was to leave MLB grind and get a chance to be a head coach in college

He saw two coaches leave LSU last year for head coaching jobs so what better way to get his name out there for head coaching jobs. As a head coach he gets to run his program and not have to answer to anyone else.

Jay is a workaholic with no kids which impacts your home life.

Josh Jordan will get a head coaching job soon as well. He wasn't getting many looks at Duke so join LSU and get more exposure and get to run your own program after his LSU stint.

Regardless of sport, almost every assistant contract will have no buyout for a promotion.

It's generally considered a really crappy thing for a HC to try to block an assistant from moving up. Thankfully, most HCs realize that when an assistant gets a head gig, it looks good on the current HC.

No coach worth anything would ever sign for a deal with a team can tell them they aren’t allowed to take a head coaching job elsewhere as a top assistant

The only time you really see this in sports is for lateral positions, or even in some promotion cases for the smaller positional jobs. The NFL allows teams (up to until recently, they may have changed this)to block positional coaches from taking better jobs but it’s very rare that teams stand in the way of that

The SEC is the premier NCAA baseball conference. Good luck getting someone to sign that.

I’m sure Georgia fans are thrilled with the news Kendall Rogers shared that they didn’t want to spend to hire a baseball coach so they had to go the assistant route.

I seriously doubt a coach of his status would require a buy out for a HC promotion. You'd never hire another PC worth a shite if that was a stipulation.

I would hope that there is language in the contract considering we lost Jason Kelly after one season...and Wes was so quick to leave the Twins but who knows. I just hope Jay finds someone he glows about as much as he did Wes.

I heard that too...

I wonder if there is any buyer's remorse about not chasing the Indiana State HC. I'd think if you came with a solid SEC level offer, days after the university declined a Super Regional host in order to have the Special Olympics, he'd think long and hard about it.

I wonder if anyone else might offer him a spot right now.
