Gary Danielson: 2015 LSU more talented top to bottom than 2011 team

Not sure if he mentioned this in the CBS broadcast on Saturday. Just said it during an interview on the Finebaum radio show.
Also says that although Harris hasn't done too much statistically yet, LSU is better at quarterback this season than they were during the 2011 season.
Finebaum mentioned that the talent comparison to the 2011 team was the highlight of the interview.
That's an awesome compliment for this team, since we know just how good and talented that 2011 team was. While I'm not sure I agree with him, just the comparison shows you how loaded we really are.
I think the only thing this team is missing that the 2011 team had was the ability to consistently force turnovers, and exceptional special teams play. Mathieu certainly had a lot to do with that.
Obviously, we have only played two games. However, we haven't forced nearly as many turnovers over the past two seasons as we did from 2010-2012. That was one of the reasons we were able to put up such high point totals in 2011.
The offense has taken one sack and turned the ball over zero times so far this season. If the defense can continue what they started in the Auburn game on Saturday and start forcing multiple turnovers per game, this 2015 LSU team will be scary good.

Defense in 2011 was better, but this offense is better.

Our defense is solid but still hasn't shown us 2011 level of play yet. That 2011defense is what got us to the dance.

I agree on both counts.
I think you could even argue that the 2011 team was more talented top to bottom on offense. They were certainly more balanced than we've seen so far this season. But Fournette pushes this offense over the top, for me.

Didn't he say two weeks ago that 2015 Auburn was more talented top to bottom than 2010 Auburn?

Funny, because that article headline came up when I did a google search a few minutes ago.
He did, yes. But besides Cam and Fairley, how talented was that 2010 Auburn team really?

+1 on defense not being as good. We need a turnover machine like TM7.
Offense is better.
Offense is better.

I agree with the special teams comment. White scares the shite out of me on punt returns.

Not hard, as both QBs sucked that year.

Not very, I've seen Auburn fans on here say the same thing.
Cam won them that 2010 title

We have only played two games. Lets see how we do at the backend of the schedule

He also said this . . .
quote:
The preseason hype continues to build for the SEC favorite Auburn Tigers.
CBS Sports analyst Gary Danielson, who will call the [Auburn} Tigers’ game against Louisville Saturday, visited practice this week, and he told The Opening Drive on JOX FM Wednesday that he thinks the 2015 team is “much more talented” than the 2010 national championship team.

Offensively we are better. Depth on the defensive line and TM7 on the 2011 team might make 2011 better. Lol and oh thosr turnovers. But our offense now has Fournette, who like Tyrann can take over a game. To be honest, I think this defense can contend. Our secondary is freaking good.
I don't know. I will say this. Watching this team, I've never felt this way before. Not even in 2011.

I don't feel the same way I felt in 2011. Not yet.

QB: Push (although I think Harris will be better by Nov)
RB: 2015
OL: 2015
Wr: 2011
DL: 2011
LB: 2015
DB: 2011 (Mathieu makes the difference)
ST: 2011 (Mathieu again)
Although its close, right now I'd have to say 2011 takes the cake

Generally speaking, I disagree with Danielson on this point but of course he's an expert so he's more likely to be right than me or anyone else on this board. I do see that the offensive line, and running backs are slightly better than 2011. I see QB and receivers as about even though there's plenty of time to get better. Special teams is about even. I see the DL and DB as coming but not quite where the 2011 team was just yet. Linebackers are about even. Overall, this team is not quite as good as 2011 but the biggest factor to me is that the 2011 team had more experience to start the season. If Mills returns full strength and Harris and his receivers blossom, this could wind up a better, more talented team. The talent is close and I hope Gary proves to be right.

He always catches them, though.
Obviously, Mathieu gave us a big edge in the punt return game. But I was talking more so on our kick and punt coverage, and the advantage Wing gave us. Keehn has kind of been a disappointment, to put it nicely.
