What about the air conditioned helmets we heard so much about?

Eventually we'll have the padding added inside and teams will start looking like they put in the Big Head Mode cheat on NFL Blitz.

The premise is simple. Put extra padding around players' heads to lessen the impact of blows to the helmet, in hopes of further reducing concussions and other negative impacts of on-field collisions.

It's a soft shell that straps around players' helmets. According to the NFL, the Guardian Cap results in at least a 10% reduction in severity of impact if one player is wearing it, and at least a 20% reduction in impact if two players in a collision are wearing it.

Why do they only wear them in practice?

helmet technology is interesting but it’s also hilarious to throw something on top of the helmet for safety

that being said it’s insane that Rogers and Brady got to wear their old arse helmets

I haven't found anything new on the AC helmets, here is a June article on them...

Thanks for the info. Any idea why only some of the players were wearing the bubble helmets?

Surely no one wants to see these monstrosities used in an actual game.

If it reduces the severity of the impact by at least 20%, why not use it as standard equipment all season?

Best I can tell from watching this video, it is still in the research and learn mode. The NFL is encouraging the use of Bubble Helments in training camp and regular season practice.
NFL Video on Guardian Caps

As far as who wears them, this is from the NFL in 2022...
"All NFL offensive linemen, defensive linemen, tight ends, and linebackers were required to wear the padded shell on their helmets in practices up until the second preseason game."

First thought = it looks like the risk of a twisting injury to the neck may be enhanced - those uneven, and malleable, surfaces could interlock instead of sliding past with a hard smooth surface contact.

I'm sure they've accounted for that, but not sure I'd want to get in a head butting contest with those until I'd convinced myself they wouldn't get all tangled up with each other.

An NFL Executive says that the guardian caps may be coming to NFL games in the future.
