Gaines is the best defender on the team and he was a massive reason why we were able to actually defend in the SEC Tournament last season and a MASSIVE reason for our defensive turnaround this season.

Alot of people on this board love to shite on him but we are hard to play when he is out there defensively. Sure he will turn it over here and there but he will also drive, assist, and has a clutch defensive gene that few players have had at LSU in the last 20 years.

I love the dude and he is a perfect example of chaos that works. He continues to improve under Coach Wade and if he can knock down some threes here and there like he did last night, they will make the difference in this team come March.

Side note, it is always hilarious when the football only fans come in here after the season and tells us how much a certain player sucks and their favorite target this year is Gaines. frick yall.

Had a few crucial turnovers as well...he is what he is... A net positive player he still has some things to clean up in his game, but plays hard and scrappy.

He keeps working on his perimeter game and it will come around.

Who doesn't. You aren't saying this but the overreactions here to him even touching the ball are fricking absurd.

If his shot starts falling, watch out.

His 3 last night really engited the comeback. Radio call was in complete shock when it fell.. but the crowd got lit and we turned up the D after and started that massive run .

Here is the play in question.. a loooooong 3.. AND HE IT IT!

Then a 20-2 run

There were plenty of crucial turnovers to go around last night, many of which were just plain careless, cavalier decisions with the basketball. I thought Gaines was actually one of our more steady guys last night. Hit a wide open 3 or two, get in the lane and make good decisions, dominate on the defensive end from the guard position (tough to do!). That's incredibly impactful. Last night's version of Gaines is an all-conference caliber player.

I don't know how anyone could watch him play and think to themselves "this guy sucks".

He's an absolute BEAST defensively, and already has almost as many steals as all of last season.

His athleticism and playing style offensively reminds me of D-Rose, obviously not as good yet -- but similar style. The turnovers will improve as he gets more experience handling the ball in a tough conference. I can't wait to see what this kid turns into, and we should have him for minimum 3 seasons.

He’s great on D and he’s actually better at creating open shots for others than Pinson. When he gets into the game the ball starts to move and he does a very good job finding open guys for shots. When he gets stronger he’ll be more secure with the ball, the mistakes don’t come from mental errors, for the most part he’s loose with the ball because of a lack of physical strength.

He turned it over trying to give it to eason who was wide open for a dunk but Eason was looking for a rebound, just need more time playing together. Also Reid kinda screwed up two assist for him as well. I thought he played his best basketball of the year in that second half, and maybe along with Eason was our best player of the game.

like it or not, Gaines is probably the only player on the team that can create for himself and others in one on one situations. he's still young and getting better.
his length is unreal. If you haven't gone early to a game and watch us warm up (dunk) you should. for being 6'2" Gaines is an unbelievable dunker. and that length is what helps him get so many steals. You live with some of the risks he takes b/c so many things he does are huge momentum builders.

He averages more assists than turnovers, and he's averaging 2 steals per game, and i'm sure he is the cause of at least 2 more turnovers a game that don't show up on the stat sheet.

I love his intensity and effort. He had a bad game at Auburn but he showed character in coming back last night with a solid game. I still think Eason should start but if Gaines can give us what he gave last night this team will go far. We HAVE to get rid of the stupid turnovers at the end of games. That game last night wouldn't be close without the foul calls and the turnovers.

Yep that dump off on the drive to Eason went right through his hands but that turnover was given to Gaines and he had the one over Reid’s shoulder where he didn’t convert. He also made 2 huge 3s to help bring us back from our biggest deficit of the game.

Gaines completely shut down #31 after he started lighting us up from 3. That wont show up in the stat sheet but it was crucial for the rest of the game

Perfect 3rd guard. He didn’t really ask for this role & the minutes accompanied, but was thrust into it after Miller was injured.

The step up from our non-conference schedule to Auburn and Kentucky has been a big adjustment in these areas

Passes that Belmont and Ohio couldn't get to are getting deflected and intercepted by elite athletes now. We're getting into traffic in the lane and get a bit overwhelmed by true bigs with both length and strength

We play aggressive defense and SEC refs can be trigger happy. Another adjustment we have to make

Our team is very talented and plays hard. We have a smart coaching staff. I'm sure they're harping on these very same adjustments. I trust Wade and the team

Gaines is a good player, no question, but he's not immune to fair critique.

Thus far in his college career, Gaines has shot 30% overall, 18% from 3.

At one point in the Auburn game, he was something like 1-22 for his previous 3-pointers. If you're not making 3s, take less of them and go to the rack.

Then, of course, he's 2-2 from beyond the arc last night!

Yesterday was a monster game for home 4 steals. 2-2 shooting from 3.

Last game was the opposite. 1-7 from 3. 1-9 overall. 0 steals. 5 TO.

He’s an amazing player to have on the court when he can give you anything on offense.
