I'm starting to think this might not be a bad idea if he lives up to expectations with the defense this year. He is regarded as an elite coach in his core area of competency (Miles, on the other hand, has no core area of competency). Saw this floated around in another thread, and was thinking about this earlier as well.

Not saying this is the number 1 pick (it's Herman and Fisher as 1a and 1b), but assuming that it doesn't unfold like how we want, I would feel pretty solid about this.

Orgeron has done this before, at a very high level, too.

Kirby Smart 0 head coaching experience as well. Would you have taken him?

I don't really care. He comes across as someone that would realize his limitations and know he should get a great OC...and would work with him to shape overall recruiting philosophy and system, etc.

Based on my impression of him, I seriously doubt some of the serial issues we see with Miles (9 guys on the field, bullshite with timeouts, special teams, and what not) happen with Aranda. So that would be an immediate improvement right there. Attention to detail across all facets would likely improve, and that would be refreshing. For LSU, it's a matter of him overseeing a very good to elite defense, annually, as a baseline assumption. The variable is offense. But I don't think he's a blowhard like Muschamp that would manage to frick that up.

Like I said, not a first choice, but would prefer him over settling for a Dan Mullen type candidate if Jimbo/Herman don't work out.

He didn't have near the talent LSU does there. He did a great job at USC too

From what I understand he did a pretty good job of recruiting at OM. Recruiting has never been his problem.

I think Kiffin is good, however he has failed at HC. I also think he's a worm and think there are character questions with him.

It would be nice to possibly see great QB play at LSU for once though.

No way we're going near Kiffin after what he did to Tennessee.

how did Mike Archer work out for LSU?

Why in the world would you hire an unproven coach when you're going to be paying $4-5 million per year? It makes no sense
