Does this make you feel any better about getting one of the 8 seeds?

So LSU coach Paul Mainieri announced Monday that No. 2 starter Aaron Nola (6-4, 4.03 ERA) will start the Tigers' opening game of the SEC Tournament Wednesday at approximately 1 p.m. in Hoover, Ala., but he will pitch no more than an inning or two.

I think we've earned a national seed," Mainieri said. "Certainly if you win an outright regular season championship in what most people concede to be the best conference in baseball."

If this is his take on pitching this weekend I really feel like he is confident about LSU rec. one of the top 8 seeds regardless of how they do this weekend.

If we go 2 and out and Kentucky and SC play in the championship with Kentucky winning it, I could see UF, UK and SC getting top 8 seeds and LSU left out. After last year it wouldn't surprise me.

I'm not questioning a NC and SEC Champion coach, but why use Nola as a starter if you are only pitching him 1-2 innings? Why not let someone else start and if needed, have Nola start one of the later innings and go 1 or 2 to save the bullpen?

so the expectation is we'll see McKune as the long reliever after Nola?

I'm not worried in the least. Use this weekend to set up your pitching for the regional and hopefully get Ross some at bats.

Going through the motions of a start in a big atmosphere is important for a young pitcher. Kinda gets some of those jitters out. Starting a game and relieving a game are two different mindsets. Nola coming out and setting the tone will be great for Nola and in turn great for the team.

Not to mention Nola would start on Sunday if we get that far. He'd already have some experience on the mound at Hoover.

And he's getting Nola ready for the opening game of the regional vs a 4 seed. Then have Gausman come back the next day and Eades in the championship game, hopefully.

PM already said if we play on Sunday, Nola is going to start. I have a feeling Eades is going to start Game 1 of the regional.

Makes sense. And yeah I get the difference in mindset between starting and relieving, I just thought that it would at least be similar if he came in at the start of an inning in relief as opposed to coming in with men on base.

Either way, here's to a long, healthy run through the SECT.

I agree with his reasoning and I like the idea of setting up the rotation, I just hope we don't shoot ourselves in the foot while doing it. Hopefully he's right on this b/c all of the hard work and this past weekend at SC will be for not if they frick around and don't get one of the top 8 seeds IMO.

I think he's more concerned about getting Gausman his rest than anything. The guy has been lights out for a few weeks, going long in each game. Don't pitch yourself into an issue with your ace.

he thought that because Ray Tanner thought that as Tanner was apparently given strong indication from someone on the committee. Mainieri's mistake was verbalizing to the media what Tanner told him.

Compared to all of the other bubble teams, he was right

I'm pretty sure he was confident about making the tourney last year too.
