Before playing LSU? Does that give them any type of advantage?

Absolutely. But LSU is still much better.

It is largely a myth that teams "improve the most" from game 1 to game 2.

Did Georgia look better vs nicholls state than they did vs North Carolina last year?

It gives BYU a huge advantage. I still expect LSU to win but you can't put a value on real live game experience.

Yes, but not enough to matter

Yes. They say the biggest improvement in a team is between games 1 and 2. I'm not sure that's accurate but it's a common thought.

It depends a lot on the team whether you can actually beat someone, but it definitely helps.

I think LSU was CLEARLY the better team over Virginia Tech in 2002 (I think that was the year), and for most matchups we would have won.
I think we win a season opener for both teams, I think we win a bowl game, and I think we win a midseason game.

Saban was furious that Beamer was able to get us roped into opening our season on the road against them, and then scheduling a cupcake the week before to work out the kinks. Our defense played well, but there was a lot of early misfires and rust on offense. They didn't have those misfires, and VT beat us pretty solidly.

Look at last season, and forget about the coaching staff change. Against Wisky, LSU was trying to figure out how to integrate both Fournette and Guice into the game at the same time. We saw some plays early that just didn't work at all. Chark hadn't moved up in the lineup yet.

Let LSU play a Sunbelt team the week before, and I'm pretty sure we move and score more vs Wisky. Probably win.

LSU, for all intents and purposes, lost the 2004 opener to Oregon State. Let's be honest, had their PK not missed multiple field goals, they would've won.

Conventional wisdom is that your team improves the most from the first game to the second game. I think that's largely true unless the either opponent is particularly out of your league, one way or another. I don't think you learn much or improve from a highly lopsided (not result, but overall talent) contest.

Having said that, if BYU avoids the injury bug, they should gain at least a slight advantage in having played a live game before we do. Perhaps more than slight. However, I don't think that will affect the outcome.

You can look at this in a couple of ways. Yes it gives them an advantage because they can play a game while getting some wrinkles out.

Then you could also say, LSU has an advantage because we focus on BYU only. LSU can start game planning when ever they feel they are ready. BYU needs to focus on another team before LSU, so will only give BYU one week to prepare for these athletes. That's going to be rough to do IMO. We'll see

I think you improve a lot, even if your opponent is a scrub. You get all the first game jitters out of the way, and vs a scrub you can do it safely.

LSU bumbled around against teams like North Carolina in 2010, and Oregon St in 2004 as stated above. Damn lucky to win either of those games, and easily could have been losses had THEY been more ready.
By midseason we stomp either team.

No,Why you ask

1. BYU will have a chance of injuring players...yes i know LSU can injure players too but Games are much more violent than practice.

2. LSU has way more talent than BYU.

3. LSU will have a game to scout BYU and know exactly what their players do and have a game plan that will be unstoppable.

i understand they get a game to get the wrinkles out. Well i am confident enough that LSU will be able to do exactly that against LSU's defense in practice.

The answer is a clear no it doesnt help BYU in any shape or form.

BYU fan here and you guys are crazy if you don't think it's a HUGE advantage for BYU to have a cupcake game first. But a bigger advantage IMHO is that we're getting you on your first game. We've had success against new coaches and systems early in the season, ask Mike Riley at Nebraska, Mike Leach at WSU, and Charlie Strong at Texas. 3 recent examples of bigger programs from P5 conferences with better recruits that would have probably had different results had we faced them a little later in the year.

Nebraska - Doesnt have the talent LSU nor plays the teams LSU plays

WSU - Well WSU should explain enough

Texas - Never was successful when Charlie was there.

The answer is clearly the opposite and I would imagine most coaches would agree. Assuming no one gets hurt they have a live game under your belt give you a head start on whoever you are playing next. Unless BYU is drastically changing their game plan LSU won't gain much from scouting that one game.

The out come may have been the same later in the year with WSU, NEB, and TEX. All three of those teams had a bare cupboard and were in total rebuild mode.
