Does anyone recall the SEC Tournament format in 1996 and 1997?

Rabalais made some reference to the league kicking around other formats than the one that has basically been in place since '98. He mentioned the ACC's pool play.

I don't think the 96 and 97 was pool play ,but some sort of round robin. I just remember it was hard to keep track of who you were going to play in the next game and such.

I don't recall it, but I found it

quote:

Eight teams qualified for the league tournament. The teams seeded fifth through eighth played a single-elimination play-in round. The two winners of the play-in games advanced to the main bracket, which was a six-team, double-elimination format, the same as the NCAA regional format used through 1998.

The current format sucks, but we can thank the NCAA committee for snubbing LSU in 2011 for the SEC deciding to get 12 teams in the SECT. LSU should have made a regional, but the NCAA Selection Committee ignored the 28 RPI (or something close) of LSU and said if they didn't make the SEC tourny they shouldn't be in the NCAA tournament.

I wish they would go to 10 teams and make 7-10 play a play-in game. Let's be honest teams 11-12 usually have no shot at making a regional without winning the whole thing.

FIFY. Making 5 and 6 seeds play a "play-in game" just seems stupid. Why don't they just take the top 8 and start double elimination and let'r rip. Could $'s have something to do with this??

Never mind some conferences do not have tournaments...but I understand the thought process behind the expansion...to help us not get screwed

LSU was the 9th seed in 2011 when the SECT was a 8 team format. We had a 36-20 record and an RPI of 21.

We didn't make a regional because the baseball selection committee held it against LSU for not making the conference tournament.

I think it was partly that and partly because they wanted to "grow" the sport by putting St. Johns in
