I'm not bashing the guy, he's a serviceable quarterback as was shown this year. However, just judging by his stats, I don't know how much more we can expect to get out of him.

He's a career 2200 yards a year (taking into account the COVID year) and if you average out his 3 non covid years he's around 2700 yards a year. 2700 yards a year is not necessarily bad but it isn't something that'll wow you either.

He's a career 14 TDs to 4 Ints/year guy. The 4 interceptions a year are nice but the 14 TDs are really low.

He averages 525 rushing yards a year with 6 TDs a year.

So, his total offensive output per year in his career has been 3,225 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 4 turnovers.

His passing stats have stayed almost completely the same year over year while his rushing stats have jumped up but he's relied more on rushing as the years have gone on.

Throughout his career his average yards/attempt have gone down every year. 8.7 y/a his freshman year, 8.3 his sophomore year, 7.9 his junior year, and 7.5 this year for an average of 8.1 yards/attempt throughout his career. Which is about average in college football.

I don't dislike the guy as a player, but I do not know how much more will be gotten out of him from a throwing standpoint. And we don't have the talent on the roster to rely on defense and running the football to get us where we want to be. We simply have to step up our throwing game. Maybe he can do that with hard work this offseason, but I'm not that confident in it. At this point, you've got to feel like he is who he is as a quarterback.

Tldr

QBs are able to improve over periods longer than 4 years. Happens a lot with young NFL QBs

Anyone that thinks the guy can't improve in Year 2 of this system with nearly the entire offense returning is a bona fide imbecile.

I agree with the points you made. And I think at this point in his career, he is what he is. However, I think the offensive line and RB’s improve, plus TE depth will help, so he should have a pretty good year.

He’ll def improve in Yr 2, as all the QBs will. Best QB will start and play. Folks act like BK is new to this.

I'm not saying he can't improve, I'm saying his history as a passer has shown that he hasn't improved. Which is the truth. He has stayed the same since his freshman year.

No.

That being said JD’s ceiling is nowhere near Nuss’ or Howard’s. Really hope that Daniels coming back doesn’t cause Howard to bounce. It would be horrible roster management if that happened

I think his production fluctuates too much for him to have hit his ceiling.

Lots of QBs blossom late. Does anyone watch football outside LSU? Jesus. You had one come to LSU's stadium and skull fk them in Hooker who is probably closer to 30 than he is early 20s.

What do you think his ceiling could be? Something like Hooker this year?

He is going to have to improve to get us in the playoffs next year. All those sacks he took are drive killers that get you beat by elite teams. My hope is that BK has a short leash on him if doesn’t show improvement. Nuss showed things in the seccg that JD can’t do and BK needs to pull the trigger on JD if he struggles.

I just can't see Nussmeier staying if Daniels is the starter again; which he will be so I don't think Nussmeier will be here next season.

What JD5 did at Az State is basically irrelevant. He was poorly coached and had weak talent around him. That is no longer true.

Just like every other qb that LSU has had, JD5 can make improvements. I expect him to be better in 2023 than he was in 2022.

Ok, but with better coaching and more talent around him this year, his passing stayed the same while is rushing jumped up.

Yes he can improve and I expect him to.

FTR1, I think Nuss would improve as well.

FTR2, CBK can improve as well. In all his years something he has now that he never had anywhere else is the dominance at WR. That's new territory for him.
