Do Umpires in the Field Ever Go to the Home Plate Umpire . . .

between innings and inform him to get his stuff together on the strike zone?

Coaches and players will get tossed if they openly challenge it but the other umps can help the poor guy out.

That was egregiously bad tonight.

Are you kidding? They're all SEC umpires, so they're just as incompetent.

Umps are a very close knit brotherhood. If anything, the field umps were prob saying, “yea keep that going so we can send him a lesson for trying to big time us last wekekend”

The impression I get from guys that I know that ump (none college or above btw) is that they know and can tell when one in their crew is *off*, but they don’t really correct in real time

I was thinking, this guy definitely needs to do some rotating.

We don’t talk, but once you establish your zone it usually stays there. This was a very bad zone at yesterday’s game, I don’t think the LSU players adjusted - both pitchers & hitters. Arky did.

SEC officiating in any sport is corrupt, so no. Chances are good every ump out there will do something similar if they get behind the plate next.

Keep your expectation low when it comes to this conference, and don't let your eyes and brain fool you.

Arkie didn’t need to adjust

No. You never get together in between innings. And as a field umpire, your mindset has to be that the guy behind the plate has a better angle on the strike zone than you do, so you can’t judge the strike zone from the field.

As a hitter there is no adjusting to that strike zone with that pitcher on the mound. There was absolutely nothing a hitter could do with pitches low and 6-12” off the plate. If they crowd the plate he will handcuff them with 96-97mph on inside corner.

I’m not saying LSU would have won if strike zone was better but they had no chance last night and kind of surprised they managed 4 runs to be honest.

Watched plenty travel ball, HS and Legion ball and sadly never saw it happen. Field umps seem resigned to 'it's their game behind the plate'. Always appreciated when they would meet to discuss a close call or fair/foul play to get it right. I would be surprised to hear these guys talk about the strike zone, which was awful last night.

To ARKs credit they kept pounding those spots (generally low/outside & low). Sadly we were all over the place so when we did cross those areas often we would not get the call which made it even more frustrating. It's a new day, let's play ball.

The strike zone is a 3-D space. An umpire behind the plate mostly has a 2-D perspective that ostensibly can be complemented by the base umpires. Hence, the appeals on check swings.

I get it from a logistics point of view that we're not gonna have base umps calling balls & strikes.

But would it be out of place for one of the base umps to nonchalantly approach the home plate ump between innings and tell him to recalibrate his SZ.

Moreover, with today's technology, real-time feedback could be given.

I kept waiting last night for him to call a ball that bounced in front of the plate a strike.

It happened in one of our HS games. My son's senior year he was about 6'5". Plate blue calls him out on a pitch just above ankle high. Next AB he apologized to my son and told him 1st plate ump after the inning told him he missed that one. This was also at an away game which made it even more surprising to me.

I think most of us accept that umps are human and will miss one here-n-there.

But that's not what we saw last night. We saw repeated and egregious bad calls.

Those other assholes don't know their partner is incompetent because they all are.

The problem wasn't the zone. It was the fact that the zone constantly changed.
