It's no secret that the fan base is split down the middle about Miles, that the offense is a complete mess, & that another subpar season will surely get Miles' seat VERY hot. Are these red flags for DC's who are being approached by LSU? Pendergast is still getting paid by USC & making $ consulting for NFL teams & knows he will have other offers from both the NFL & CFB. Does he want to risk getting tied up in a volatile situation where the last DC left because, despite his success, couldn't get the admin to guarantee him anything "long term"? Same thing with Shoop?

Reading the tea leaves says yes. IF Chavis thought Miles' job was secure, then why would he get all bent out of shape about the "Miles clause" in his contract. I think that its obvious that he thinks that there is a chance Miles gets fired in the next few years. This would definitely have an affect on the new DC and limit our candidates IMO.

Miles will retire, or be force to resign in less than 3 years. So, yes to your question. The uncertainty with Miles is why Chief is not here anymore. Sure, it boiled down to money, but Chief needed guaranteed money, and I don't blame him. Shite, Miles could be gone real soon.

You give the fans too much credit.

I think that could definitely impact the search. However I am also hoping we can get a guy that isn't scared and could view this as an opportunity to showcase what he can do with a talented defensive roster. If the new guy comes in and does a good job he should be in good shape even if Miles isn't at LSU. He could be retained by the new coach or would be a hot commodity on the open market. There's always a chance Miles turns it around and everybody wins (from an LSU perspective).

Why would a candidate for an assistant coaching position give a flying frick about what the fans think about the head coach? I don't see the relevance.

Because the fan base is one indicator of how stable the situation is. If a candidiate knew the HC was only going be around for 1 or 2 years that would be a huge factor in deciding if he wants to pitch his tent there.

it is their concern about Miles coaching ability that hampers the search. He simply doesn't have the respect to draw a great coordinator other than a long time friend, and I'm not sure he is a great coordinator.

Sure, presuming a DC candidate has a preference to land a job he can hold down for the next six-plus years.

But if you're an up-and-comer who wants to continue to enhance your reputation and position yourself for head coaching positions, are you thinking beyond two or three years? A successful stint at LSU, even a short one, is only going to help you.

That's not what this thread is about. Did you stop reading there? It's about job security. When a program brings in a new head coach they usually clean house. I'll let you figure the rest out.

True but if the DC is a good coach he could replace Miles, that is a HUGE opportunity.

Would you tie a DC to a contract dependent to the HC's tenure if you had complete faith in the HC?

Ten years of averaging ten plus wins a year to go along with three west titles, two SEC titles, and two BCSCG visits is about as stable as it gets.

Even with a five loss 2014, LSU still ranks in the top fifteen for wins among power five schools in the last three years.

No DC with a brain would pass on LSU out of some kind of fear that Les was on the way out.

Les is going to retire here with the most wins in LSU football history. You have to be delusional to think a DC is concerned about Les' future!

But it's LSU.....it's a Saturday night in Death Valley.....one would think the job is attractive to several coaches, but.....

I wrote a note to myself to keep an eye open for your next post, so that I could ask you a question. Didn't you post in a reply to a coaching topic, last week (I believe), that you were 1000% sure that Chavis wasn't going anywhere? So what does your gut tell you about who they hire as the DC?

I love our fanbase. 2010 - 2014 is the greatest 5 year run in the history of LSU.
