Dandy Don posted that a player loses their red shirt the second they play, but I used to remember that a true freshman could play up to the 3rd game before burning the shirt. Am I wrong or did they change the rule? What is the actual rule?

Yeah, about 15 fricking years ago, man. There is an injury loophole, but the rule is you play, you don't redshirt. And has been for quite some time.

This place is always up for a good red shirt rule discussion.

You are not wrong. It has not been instituted yet but has been proposed. You are actually more aware of college football happenings than all of the posters who have responded so far - CONGRATULATIONS !!! Even though it's really not that big of a deal for that to happen here.

Coaches want the NCAA to let redshirting freshmen play in 4 games each

quote:

According to Fox Sports’ Stewart Mandel, a new rule is being proposed to the NCAA by the American Football Coaches Association that, if passed, would allow players to play in up to four games during a season without burning their redshirt years. So coaches could save their four-star signees and break them out just in time for bowl games or FCS games, all while preserving four years of eligibility for those players.

quote:

Following the AFCA’s board meetings last week in Phoenix, Berry said that while McCaffrey and Fournette made headlines, players shutting it down before a lower-tier bowl game is “not a new thing.” While those particular stars dealt with legitimate health issues last season, others in the past might develop a “magic injury” right before the bowl.

I am not really sure Red-Shirts really matter anymore. As LSU proved the freshman are coming in big enough and talented enough to start. If you have top tier Offense and Defensive coaches that can develop talent, why not play the best player on the team regardless of what year they are.

Of course that must be taken with a grain of salt for QBs, because statistics tell us generally older QBs do better than younger ones. I am sure there are several examples of freshman and sophomore QBs excelling, but generally they need a bit more time.

Any other position, let the best kid play, because chances are someone is coming in next year that could be as good or better.

While it is true that there is some movement to alter the rule...that isn't what the OP was asking.

The current rule has been around for a good long while. You play...no redshirt.

Remember Wendell Davis played in one kickoff play in his freshman year and lost a year of eligibility!!!

I know this was not the point of your post but I don't get why so many are upset about Brennan not getting red shirted. He will be our back-up quarterback. He needs to get as many reps as possible. Let the rest take care of itself.

I think a 2-3 game limit(with non conference games being the kicker) would be fair.

You mean I'm not the only person that remembers Wendell Davis.

The new rule is if they're good enough to redshirt, don't redshirt them because they'll transfer, lol.

So, for example, if Florida State hopes to red shirt their QB, who is out for the season, they can do that. I would think without any doubts, he can be red shirted.
