Did LSU fans feel slighted when Paul Dietzel bolted for Army & later USCe?

That was a little before my time, but he never seemed beloved by LSU fans even though he coached our first National Champion Team.

I think he "bolted" for Army.

Also, SCAR wasn't in the SEC. So I doubt anybody really gave a shite...

That was at the end of Army's run as a big-time program, but no one knew it yet.

It was even worse than Saban leaving.

When Saban left everyone was disappointed but could understand the leap to the NFL. It wasn't like he went straight to 'bama.
When Dietzel left foe Army people were pissed because it was another college team.

Back then, when a service academy asked you to come, you accept their offer. It was an honor to serve back then.

Hell yes they felt slighted when he left for West Point, especially after proclaiming that he would never leave LSU. It did not work out for him there. When he went to USCe, he was on the rebound, a rebound that never came. His first game as USCe coach was a loss to LSU in Tiger Stadium in 1966. I was 8 years old and that was my 1st year as an LSU season ticket holder. The Dietzel game was the only game I missed that year. I guess some adult wanted to take my ticket. I celebrated my Golden Jubilee on Oct. 1, 2016, the night of Coach O's debut. I had a chance to meet Dietzel several times when he was AD. He was very charismatic and I could see why he was a successful motivator. Dietzel later said that leaving LSU was the biggest mistake he ever made in his life and I believe him.

I remember a great line by a Sports Illustrated writer who Dietzel was having a feud with. It may have been a stretch but it was a great line worthy of a modern day Trump tweet. He wrote that Dietzel had more to do with the downfall of Army football than the Viet Nam War.

I don't think that's the case at all. Coaches weren't rushing to coach at Army.
Dietzel had a history with them after serving on the staff of legendary Red Blaik. He didn't leave to "Serve".
There were rumors of extrinsic factors in Dietzel leaving. People were very upset. He was "Pepsodent Paul" and was a golden boy.

Yes we did. When he returned with South Carolina a few years later, the crowd (for the most part) was silent when the USC team came on to the field before the game. A few boos, fewer cheers (USC fans), mostly silence. I remember that night quite clearly.

I was a sophomore at LSU then. It was a shock and there was a lot of bitterness. After the NC year the alumni had given Dietzel a swimming pool at his house rather than a new car which "he could drive away in". The game against SC was labeled "D-Day".

Fans felt anger. I was young but my dad cussed a blue streak. Even though army was relevant then, my father said it was a dead end.
Of course, he having been a navy Seabee during wwII may had a little to do with that!

hide the women. paul dietzel and jim Corbett were popular. Corbett was shot outside or inside a traveler motel in 1966. draw your own picture.

Yep, Army and Navy football teams were like Notre Dame then, Big Time Football.

According to a radio interview that Dietzel gave around 2008 (I believe), the night before the 1962 Orange Bowl the President of LSU Gen Troy Middleton told Ditzel it was his duty to his country to accept the coaching position at Army.
Dietzel was the first non West Point Graduate to Coach the Army Team.
