Did Former Players Demand Jones Be Hired At LSU?

I seem to remember a story about all the former players demanding that Jones be hired as HC at LSU or else they would refuse to support the school anymore and refuse to have some annual BBQ or game or whatever.
Was that true? And have these former players said anything about Jones now?

Dale and the Boys (Collis, Clarence Caesar, etc.)sort of strong armed Alleva after the Trent Johnson failure and even threated to not have the alumni game, and other functions.

Seems to be a pattern here.

And now, Ceasar said he's one of several players from the Brown era who have gone to Alleva to plead for Jones. He claimed the feeling is strong.
"If they don't hire Johnny, they might not have an alumni game because nobody's going to want to go back there," he said.
And if it isn't strange enough to have apparent phantom candidates in the search, the search has been unusual for how polarizing its lead candidate seems to be.

Good Question.

Not shocking. Alleva caved and hired an awful candidate who underachieved at North Texas. People can't see the forest for the trees. The BR Mafia wanted their boy taken care of.

So, where is the accountability?
Why don't these same guys have the 'nads to now return to the issue and either admit they were wrong or suggest why Jones is not failing the program?

Because their first priority is making sure their people get taken care of, the health of the program and team success takes a backseat to that.

The groundswell for Bob Sharkey after next season is gonna be huge.

Brady had to deal with sanctions.
Trent wouldn't recruit worth a d@mn.
Jones was a Stadium Reunion Tour for a band that most people forgot was great in the studio but sucked live.
We need to divorce from the past completely. This isn't Alabama and Dale now that we're out of the NCAA crosshairs isn't some Bear Bryant.
The Tulane Effing Green Wave just hired a 4-stop NBA HC and former NBA player with deep ties to both the League and the local NBA Franchise.
Meanwhile we have a guy whose lacking in every pre-requisite necessary to be a good coach other than pride.
We're a joke in Hoops. What's worse is that our AD is 0/2 (0/3 counting Coarch Caldwell) in hiring a coach in that department. What's worse #2 is that we have a shady, crooked, political academian who has as little understanding of the importance of Athletics as he does capability to politick.
We're suffering at multiple levels across the AD. Hoops' situation is just a symptom of a much, much larger problem.

Yes. There was a big push for him by Dale Brown and the former players under Brown. There was the same push in 2008, though probably a little more tempered. LSU didn't want to hire one of the key people implicated in the issues that got LSU put on serious probation just one coach prior. Also (although it's pathetic to even have to think this way) part of the push for Jones was skin color. LSU hired Johnson and the skin color thing became a non-issue.
The cries for Jones only grew louder in 2012. Johnson flopped at LSU and wasn't all that great in handling the former players. Jones also hammered Johnson's LSU team in 2010. Finally, whether he admits it or not, Brown still sees LSU has "his" program. In some respects he has a point because he did build it to its highest peak. However, he's tried to wield influence since Brady's departure and the 2012 coaching change was the perfect time to bring in Jones.
The bottom line is that Jones would have never been a candidate at any other power conf. school but LSU. In 2012 Alleva (whether his fault or not) couldn't lure a proven big name coach to take the LSU job (Jamie Dixon was the one talked about most) and LSU wouldn't pay for Tubby Smith (who was Alleva's choice). Once that settled, the thought was "let's give Jones a shot." To his credit, he HAS improved the program. That said, his ceiling has been reached and it's time to move on.

That is nothing compared to this.

How come you guys don't link the article you are pulling these quotes from?

Another relevant passage:
I know Alleva is the fall-guy for the hire of Jones, but I certainly sympathize with the pressure he was under to make the pick.

Ceasar, who said he is one of several former LSU players who have contacted LSU athletic Joe Alleva on behalf of Jones, joined a growing list of endorsers of the North Texas coach. Every former LSU head coach from the post-Pete Maravich era - Dale Brown, John Brady and the recently-departed Johnson - have all said he's the man for the job. Notable players from the past like Rudy Macklin and Collis Temple, Jr. have come out in support of Jones.
I know Alleva is the fall-guy for the hire of Jones, but I certainly sympathize with the pressure he was under to make the pick.

And where are all these guys at now?
Crickets.
They're nowhere to be found. Not a sound. They don't love LSU. They watch each other's backs. It makes me furious.

Alleva's biggest problem was hiring TJ. When that did not work out he lost a lot of credibility, and gave the JJ cabal all the daylight they needed.
Now that it's obvious JJ isn't cutting you won't find any of these people, but you will find Alleva is still out AD who was on the job when it happened.
La. is not s basketball state in that our HS do not crank out a lot of talent; however, we have been extremely fortunate to get legends like Pete and Shaq to come here from oos. We were also able to entice AAs like CJ and Rudy to come in too.
I'd follow the Dale Brown model. Get a coach with a big persona to bring in talent while locking down in state talent.

Id follow the model where we get a coach that gets the most from his players, even those with less talent. We don't need a big personality.
