Looks like this was written from the Washington perspective since it was on their website.

The article is about three years old and an interesting look back at a piece of LSU history - especially since we open with Washington on the road next season.

One major network wanted to put this game on national TV, but LSU Athletic Director Bob Brodhead refused to change the game to an afternoon kickoff. He reasoned that Tiger fans would revolt or perhaps literally show up at sunrise to start tailgating.

Thanks for posting the article. Dalton has always been one of my favorite Tigers and Saints.

I was at that game. It was the only bright spot in an otherwise dismal season.

I remember that game really well. Went with my dad. It was like when USC came, it was west-coast "exotic". Great article, brings it right back.

When are you ppl gonna get it thru your thick skulls. The AD, Miles, the Governor, even the mesiah Obama has no control over what time games are played. This is 100% controlled by the SEC and the networks.

Ponchy Tiger--

I'm going to have to disagree with you on that one.

L.S.U. can control its own fate on this one. What it lacks is the will to do so. If game time becomes a non-negotiable position, then you can bet your sweet yah-yah that game time will be at night. Don't delude yourself into thinking that we don't have the final word on when we play OUR games.

I was at that game. Saw Dalton break the 65 yard run. I remember it as an 80 yarder. He was run down from behind around the 15 yard line. He'd had a bit of a hamstring pull the week before, otherwise he would have scored. I lived in a one room apartment on Nichols Ave.

Fellas, twenty three years goes by in a flash. Tiger football has been quite amazing the last few years. Anyone who who reads the Rant will remember the 2008 season for the rest of their lives - it was the greatest year of college football ever.

no one can make us play a day game, what would happen if our administration refused? its not like CBS is holding a gun to our heads saying Play a day game or else!

LSU COULD tell both the SEC and CBS to go F themselves and refuse to move any game. We just don't have an AD with big enough rocks (Like Broadhead) to do that. I'd accomodate the SEC/CBS 1 game per year and tell em the rest are off limits. What are they going to do if we just flat out refuse to move the game to afternoon? Let them fine us or whatever, but playing at night should be done at all costs even if we have to breech a few contracts to do so. F em all if they don't like it..........

Here's a similar situation from Brodhead's book, "Sacked."

This is Brodhead on the 1982 Florida State game in TS with an Orange Bowl bid on the line:

ABC Television, figuring the game carried significant bowl ramifications, wanted it for its national game of the week and called to ask me if I would move the starting time up eight hours to 11:30 am to allow the network to carry the game. Tough as it was to turn down the $100,000 national television spot, I declined. I didn't want to do anything to disrupt the team's momentum. The game was far too important to the future of the football program.

I guess these days the SEC and other major conferences sign the TV deals and the teams have to dance to their tune.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

And ... we should be able to win important games against major BCS opponents in TS no matter what time they're played.

However, I did appreciate Brodhead's "team first" attitude.

It's a refreshing contrast to the way ADs today bow and worship at the altar of the TV revenue god.

I just reread "Sacked" for about the fifth time.

Quite an interesting read.

For one thing, that was back in the day that all it took to get in the Student Section was a valid LSU ID. They used to go way over the allotted number in the Student Section for a big game. I was in there for the Washington game and we were packed in like sardines. As a matter of fact,I seem to remember that the Fire Marshall raised so much Hell about the Washington game that it's why they started going to having to have advance tickets for the students. Oh man, those were the days.

Exactly! Everyone stood up in the student section - the first row on the step/walkway, the next row standing on the seats, etc. The entire student section was filled like that with a row of people standing on all of the seats, and in the aisles, and the stairways, etc. It was ridiculously awesome to experience!
