Is a myth that somehow refuses to die a peaceful death. There are plenty of games where LSU wore the classic purple Jersey combo (with gold pants and helmets) and exceeded expectations. Cf. Texas A&M in 1986, 1988, 1990; Georgia in 1986; Miss State in 2007; Georgia Tech in 2000 Peach Bowl, etc.
And no one ever mentions other Tiger athletic teams wearing purple. I remember seeing the basketball team make a Final Four wearing nothing but purple (1986) and a baseball team in 1997 win a World Series clad exclusively in purple jerseys.
