As I've mentioned, LSU needs a better set of talking points on this topic. Several other competitors in our division apparently do a much better job of successfully communicating the pluses of staying. Staying as a top program in the SEC is made harder by these defections.

this is stupid. Underclassmen are leaving from every school

especially kids that have had great seasons and likely have hit it peak of their draft stock

That's exactly what he is saying and it's exactly why he doesn't know shite about football or coaching.

and this year guys like Trai Turner hop on the train

Name one person that MIGHT leave this year other than Turner that doesn't make any sense. I thought Hilliard has said he is staying already. However, even if he leaves with Magee coming on pretty strong in 2013 and Fournette coming in, him leaving makes sense.

quote:

and the defense let us down.

Of the players that left last year on defense who was a surprise and who didn't make any sense?

quote:

Next year, it will probably be the offense if guys like Hilliard and Turner leave

Our offense is not going to take a step backward because Hilliard leaves. It will be because we lose our senior QB that threw for 3,000 yards, a RB who ran for 1,000 and 2 WRs that had 1,000 yards each. Hilliard is very replaceable and that is not an insult to him. But our offense will not suffer next year without him.

So in total you have named 2 guys that would be a surprise if they left and neither one of them has declared yet. Who are all of these other big surprises?

You do realize that by saying this you are saying LSU would have crappy DBs if there were none heading into the NFL.

No, what I'm saying is I really don't care about what LSU players do in the NFL. My "11 to 0" comment might have been a little extreme. I'm glad we have some stud DBs in the league to help maintain our image as DBU.

He's smart to leave. Have a good combine and start the NFL clock.

Why comes back to get 3-5 carries a game?
to get a degree? to enjoy college life another year? to have a chance at winning a ring no one can ever take away from you?

you people seem to think every guy on LSU's roster will play in the NFL and that that is the be-all/end-all of these guys.

Using terms like retarded, BS, and stupid (not you Doc, but some others in this thread) to describe what a kid would be doing who decides to come back and get a degree ... well, y'all are just underselling the benefits of staying. And, apparently, so is our staff.

Hilliard leaving will not affect the offense

Turner may, but he will also probably be collecting a nice check next year as well.

I say good for him. He will be living his dream.

Who the frick are you to tell these guys that they should delay chasing their dream?

With Odell and Jarvis I definitely can't blame them. They are locks as a first round pick.

No, they are not. They are great players and have nothing left to prove in college, and I wish them nothing but the best. But they are definitely NOT first round locks.

OBJ has received a late 1st round grade & Landry a 2nd round grade [per CBS analyst]

The benefits of staying aren't worth the risk under new rules.....1st round lottery tickets are over.

Name the school that LSU competes against tht come close.

Alabama state has more on the above list than Alabama and Auburn does.

McShay has Beckham ranked like 40 something overall. So analysts are all over the place.

Landry a 2nd round grade

2nd round does not = 1st round.

My comment was simply that neither one of these guys is a LOCK for the first round.

There are a ton of incredibly talented receivers in this draft class.

I'm only going to speak on Hilliard here but um, to answer you
quote:

to get a degree?
If this is highly important to him, I suspect he can finish it just fine. Especially if he latches on as even a deep sub in the NFL.
quote:

to enjoy college life another year
Um. College life is cool and all, but if he can make a roster.....money > college life. Part of college life is being broke. Maybe he's tired of that.
quote:

to have a chance at winning a ring no one can ever take away from you?
Or, get injured and never have a shot at playing for money. THAT is a biggie.

quote:

you people seem to think every guy on LSU's roster will play in the NFL and that that is the be-all/end-all of these guys.
Nah. I actually think Hilliard will not make a roster but, I could be wrong. He's been at LSU a good while though so, if he really valued education, then he's probably close to his degree anyway.

quote:

to describe what a kid would be doing who decides to come back and get a degree ... well, y'all are just underselling the benefits of staying
As for this. I'll move away from Hilliard. I'm sorry. For many players who are virutally locks to make a roster, staying is just flat out a dumb decision because the primary long term benefit of staying is NOT completely eliminated by going pro(degree) BUT, staying and getting injured most certainly can eliminate going pro.

Last year was the first major hit we took with players leaving early. Maybe LSU is just ahead of the curve on this. Would you rather us recruit lower in talent that sticks around for 4 or 5 years?

I repeat being a 1st round pick is not that much more valuable than being a 3rd or 4th rounder......it's marginal dollars amounts after the top 15 picks. And I use the word marginal because every LSU footballer except brad wing lived in the top 10% last year.

I know exactly what the new CBA entails, and yes it does impact things.

Maybe you don't know the concept of gambling short-term for longer-term potential income, aka lifetime earnings potential. Or the idea of winning a ring?

Bama seems to know how to preach this. LSU lost 11 early guys last year to the draft; next closest in the SEC was Florida at 4 and then UGA at 3. Don't pretend this isn't a mentality that LSU seems to have embedded in its culture right now.

It made sense last year for several guys from a $$$ standpoint, but it also didn't for several guys. And, as I've pointed out, there are plenty of other factors to consider for players.

Current NFL league minimum for rookies is $420K. Any kid who feels confident he will make an opening day roster should leave unless he thinks there is some significant chance of moving WAAAAAAY up in the draft the next year. And, even then and even if he thinks there is zero chance he will underperform next year, he's probably smart to weigh the possibility of injury into the equation.

$420K folks. I would love to see a list of all the other regular LSU students who are juniors who would turn down $420K today, if offerred. Then, I'd like to ask those few how many of them would STILL refuse if I told them there was even the faintest chance that while doing one of their biology labs, they might have a "career ending injury" taking that $420K off the table.

LSU is losing a 3000 yard passer, two 1000 yard receivers and a 1000 yard RB. Look. I hope LSU does well next year but there is no rational human being who would consider betting on a possible championship to outweigh a possible injury.

See my question regarding regular students turning down $420K previous to this post.
