Commentators are pronouncing "Alec Box" (which I've heard before)

Is there an "x" sound in it? Or is "Alec" the right way?

No problem. It has been discussed ad nauseum here and so think Alec was his nickname even though his name was Alex.

Kind of hard to say you words that end with X. Alec works much better.

Hawthorne would say "El-ec," FWIW.

Exactly. We are supposed to believe a guy that couldn't pronounce Alex Edward's name and the city of Alexandria correctly. It could very well have been Alec Box instead of Alex Box but I simply don't believe it when the source is Jim Hawthorne.

During the time when LSU was transitioning to the New Box from the Old Box I recall Skip confirming it is pronounced Alec.
