As a reminder, the 12-team playoff will consist of the six highest-ranked conference champions and the six highest-ranked at-large teams as chosen by the CFP selection committee. The top four conference champions will be seeded Nos. 1 through 4 and receive first-round byes. The remaining teams will play first-round games on the campus of the better seeds.

What last season would have looked like:

USC traveling to Alabama are the types of games that will make the CFP so much money in the long run.

Potentially four extra games for the champion and runner up? I see lots of opt outs for highly ranked draft picks.

Question is what happens when the teams that have a bye complain about not making money off the home game

my guess is it would be a wash. ya, they wont get any money, but they also dont risk injury.

You think they care about injury? They care about money.

very true, but at that point, the amount of money to be made off of playing in the semis and/or natty would, i think, outweigh one home game. there's always a balance of risk reward.

My only issue is that the committee has moved the CFP championship out of the normal NY6 rotation to add stadiums that don’t necessarily help the fans. I know it’s about money, but I’d rather watch a championship at the Rose Bowl and not Sofi.

The home playoff games are going to be electric.

First two rounds should be on campus. Good luck getting fans to shell out to travel across the country for a stand-alone quarterfinal

Ridiculous that it stretches out to January 20th. 1st round should start the week after conference championships and finish no later than it does now

Also, no Saturdays in the quarterfinals, semi-finals or finals.

I can see the quarterfinals games having a ton of empty seats. That is a lot of traveling around the country. Might as well get rid if the faux bowl games and and make it like the NFL playoffs

I like it more meaningful games, bowl games are trash outside of playoff games.

I mean, I want the team to have the bye, but could you imagine Tiger Stadium vs Michigan at night with a playoff atmosphere?

Next.level.

I wouldn’t think the better players would opt out with a chance to play for and win a national championship. That would be stupid to opt out when your team makes the playoffs

Right now, conferences get $6M for each team in the semifinals. I'd guess that going forward, schools with a bye would individually get money as well. Or they just suck it up because you got a bye and that is good enough incentive.

These opening round games are going to be amazing.

Outside of that stretching it out so far is not awesome.

After the 2025 season, the entire college football schedule may change. It has to be this way right now due to the ESPN contract they already had in place. There is talk about moving the season up a week (currently week 0) so the season doesn't stretch so late into January.
