Wasn't Fresno State a 4 seed in their regional when they won the CWS?
They were 33-27 at the end of the regular season, so they would not have made the NCAA tourney if they hadn't won the WAC tourney.
Crazy.

Yeah, after reading this, Fresno may be the biggest Cinderella of the CWS.
quote:
The Bulldogs entered the Western Athletic Conference tournament at 33-27; they would likely not have made the NCAA tournament without winning the WAC tournament, which they did.
They were the #4 seed in their regional. Since only four teams play in each of 16 regionals, this is the equivalent of a team seeded #13 or lower in the NCAA basketball tournament.
No #4 seed had ever advanced to the College World Series. By contrast, no #13 or lower seed has ever made the "Elite 8" of the men's basketball tournament, which is arguably equivalent to the eight-team College World Series.
Six times in the NCAA tournament, including three times in the College World Series, they faced elimination with a loss. They won all six times.
They won a total of 10 tournament games against six different teams ranked in the top 20. ESPN pointed out that in terms of the NCAA basketball tournament, Fresno State's run would be equivalent to a 13 seed beating a 4 seed in the first round, a 5 seed in the second round, a top seed in the Sweet 16, a second seed in the Elite 8, another top seed in the Final Four, and still another 2 seed for the championship.

Fresno State gets that award

Wonder what the Vegas odds were on Fresno winning the championship?

They were still good this year. They won their conference's regular season title, but it was a one bid conference so when they didn't win their conference tournament, their bid went awayy

Fresno is the correct answer. That team caught wild fire that year.

Fresno state was the biggest if u go back to 08. Number 4 seed in a regional and had to win their conference tourney. Had to face elimination several times

No. Fresno State a few years back was a #3 or 4 seed.

Coastal was a great ball club last year, there closer had one of the nastiest sliders I have seen in recent memory . No one could touch that kid, forget his name .

I always overlook Fresno in this question because I just tend to lump them in with Fullerton and Long Beach; and during our run in the 90's, there was always a few directional Cali schools that were really good.

Fresno 2008 was THE baseball cinderella of all time

Davidson, if it continues it's current streak, could end up being the all-time biggest Cinderella. They just rolled the number 2 seed in the country (UNC) to advance to the super regionals in 3. They've never even been to a regional before and only have three players on scholarship.

Last year was a super WEIRD year for champions:
Coastal Carolina
Leicester City wins British Premier League--first title in 133 years of trying!! 133 years!!! The first team NOT named Manchester City, Man United, or Chelsea in the last 22 years!! WTF.
Chicago Cubs--predicted, but breaking a 108 year drought is still notable
Cleveland Cavs--break a 52 year championship drought for any sports franchise.

Fresno winning as a 4 seed pretty much automatically puts them as the biggest Cinderella, but that team was ranked preseason and was supposed to be pretty good. They just struggled out of conference and down the stretch in the WAC before putting it together in the postseason.

Easily WAY WAY more of a cinderella. Past has nothing to do with present in terms of cinderella status. Cinderella literally means a team from nowhere came out and could win (going deep in tournament) or won the whole thing.
A 4 seed winning the NCAA baseball tournament would be the equivalent of a 13-16 seed winning the NCAA basketball tournament. That's a cinderella run. Not a highly ranked 2 seed winning it all (equiv. to 5-8 seed in NCAA basketball tournament).
Fresno State was truly a cinderella for the ages, they had ONE player drafted in the Top 12 rounds of the draft that year, they finished 37-26 on that season before the NCAAT, they lost the maximum amount of games in their regional, super regional and in Omaha and still won the whole thing. They truly were a cinderella, amazing what they team was able to do.
