Pete Carroll and Tom Landry come to mind. Anyone else?

Give me a college football example of someone that bombed in his first stint and went on to be a NC winning coach. I can't think of any.

The problem is that while people like Saban, Belichick, and Carroll may not have been as great as they eventually became in their first coaching job, their first head coaching job was not a fricking abortion. Orgeron's was.

Also on top of that all 3 had experience as coordinators.

Gene Stallings
Bombed at two. Only head coach twice before Alabama. At A&M and the Cardinals and was fired from both without any hardware.

He did have at least one good year at A&M where he won the conference championship, as well as a Cotton Bowl win in his third season.

I'll give you that one though given that his entire stint was pretty awful at A&M, even though he was better than Orgeron was at his first stop. Anyone else?
