You cannot check for bat rolling nor shaving without removing the cap. He is checking for cracks and glue. Composite doesn't really dent. It gets really fine spider web cracks that will inevitably cause the bat to break, but until that day the bat will be really hot. They don't allow the cracks for safety from the bat breaking but also for ball speed coming off the bat.
