If something shocking happens in to the top five picks of the 2017 NFL Draft, it very well might involve running back Leonard Fournette. I hear the big back out of LSU is increasingly being viewed as a best-of-breed player in this draft and a true blue chipper and he is being considered at the highest reaches of the first round.

Frankly, it would take a promise of a reincarnation of some kind of Walter Peyton/Earl Campbell hybrid beast back for me to invest that high of a draft pick in a running back in this day and age. But the more football people I speak to as scouts and executives emerge from their all-day draft meetings is that Fournette could surprise with how high he goes.

Some have suggested to me that Fournette is even in play at No. 1 with the Browns. Yes, you read that correctly. I don’t see that happening, and in the end, I suspect the Browns take pass rusher Myles Garrett. But then again, the Browns are capable of some extreme curveballs in that front office and their version of analytics tends to swing outside of convention. Maybe someone believes the de-valuation of running backs has gone too far.

It could finally be a better draft for backs than what we’ve seen recently, and Fournette might set the tone very early if he goes as quickly as I am becoming convinced he’s about to.

I'm gonna bet that the bears trade with someone at 3 and Leonard goes there. I'll just blindly say the eagles trade #14, and 2 second round picks

Fournette going #1 but being stuck with the Browns would be the definition of a Pyrrhic victory.

Would be great publicity for LSU but a terrible landing spot for him :(

That's pretty far fetched.
Regardless, let's hope LF7 goes somewhere with with a chance for success.

He would be a great pick for anyone, even as the first selection.

If you evaluate him as an AD type impact player it's not far- fetched at all. That's a once a decade kind of player and if you think he's the beast mode freak show that AD was, then the DE/RB value proposition kind of goes out the window. So if not at one, Like the poster above said, if he gets to three I could see a trade. A lot of teams see a guy like that as " the last piece". And what fan base would not do flips if he was on their team? Can you imagine the buzz coming out of rookie camp when Leonard starts blowing people up?

An an LSU fan, it would be nice for LF to go to Carolina because its by far his best chance of success in the top 10.

On the other hand, I'm a much bigger Saints fan so absolutely frick that. Go somewhere in the AFC LF7.

Great news on LF's evaluation.

While it would be great to see him go to the Browns or Bears, as noted above going to team like Carolina with a decent offensive line would likely be better for his career.

The Browns are the only franchise stupid enough to draft a RB at no. 1

I've said this before, but I absolutely disagree.

Cleveland has put together one of the best OLs outside of Dallas, and we know how great that was for Elliot last year. They have a legit WR corps as well. QB needs to be addressed obviously but that could still happen with Cousins, Garrapolo, or even Romo. They could also snag Watson or Trubinsky with the #12 pick and all of a sudden be loaded with young talent.

It looks like Jax is the likely landing spot for him, and I'd much rather him running behind the Browns line than Jax.

Imagine LF running in the same city and uniform that Jim Brown did. And bringing that lowly franchise into playoff contention and maybe even a title some day? Lebron would be a second class citizen compared to LF if he turned that franchise around.

I say bring on the Browns. LF deserves the #1 pick and a shot at following in Jim Brown's shoes (on the field at least, although I'm Gonna Get You Buga does have a nice ring to it too )

Fournette would be perfect for Carolina. The Panthers have to start limiting Cam Newton's running, or else CN is going to be out of the league at 32.

But since I don't like the Panthers, or Newton, I hope they don't get him.

I said something to that effect last week and got nothing but downvotes (i.e. that he should not be out of the Top 5 picks). I'm not being biased, as I don't like some of the things the's done. But the guy has the strength and speed to score on any play and the potential to be one of the all-time greats.

When healthy , the Browns actually do have a good young line. And they have a boatload of early picks. And they have good cap space. They could trade back, pick up another second round pick and still get Fournette. As long as they get a QB in free agency ( a big if ) they could remake that offense overnight. And if you think they won't get a future starting QB in free agency, and QB is the most important position, wouldn't it make more sense to trade back , get more draft picks and select a QB anyway?
