They made the decision to do that before the 2007 recession. They thought that upscale condos would make more money than college bars.
I was at the Buckhead Close Down Fest in the summer of 2007. The Gin Blossoms were there. After the party, the wrecking crews came and demolished all of the old college party bars there. They started to build upscale condos in their place.
The recession slowed construction somewhat in that particular area . . . the traditional Buckhead area. However, just south of traditional Buckhead was the Lindbergh City Center, and they started to build a couple of condos there too. The recession shut those down. One condo complex was never finished by the time I left last year. The other condos finished, but remained empty for a year before they were converted to apartments.
I'm glad to be out of ATL, though. Too many douchebag Falcons and Bulldong fans there.

The developer was Ben Carter Properties. Balfour Beatty Inc. was the original GC. My company had sub-contracts on that project. Luckily, we got paid.
