man, bowl games can't "just go". there is no overriding authority over bowl games. they are independent organizations that exist to promote tourism in their city and sell hotel rooms and restraunt space. this is a free country and they have a right to have an "exhibition football game". frankly, players love the minor bowls as they get to travel and have a great time w/o the stress and pressure of a conference game. to arbitrarily remove bowls from our culture is cruel indeed. the majority, VAST MAJORITY of teams don't have a shot at the nc. seeing posts like this make me think no one gives a shite about the players.

I remember how big a deal it was for LSU to play in the Independence Bowl after so many years of futility.

yea, we played a saban led michigan state and the team, coaches, parents and fans had a blast. the vast majority of teams have no shot at a nc, let them have their fun while earning the host cities some bucks. all good and no harm.

Any playoff needs to be 8 teams. I know u would still have a 9th team with a bitch but look at this year. If this was 2014 with a 4 team playoff, kstate, Oregon, and ND are in. Who is the most deserving 4th? Bama? LSU? Florida? Georgia? I know the season isn't over and it will probably end differently but if this was the end of the year, holy hell would there be some bitching

BUT there are WAY too many of them.

Why? What difference does it make? Fans go to them, the host cities profit, schools can decline bids if they think they'll lose money, makes for great TV through December.

There is really no drawback and they don't take anything away from the larger bowls.

No playoff in college football for 4, 8, 12 or 32 teams will ever be worth anything until the ranking system and selection system for the playoffs are fixed. All you are doing is expanding the amount of teams chosen by a broken system.

The "problem" with college football is regular season inequality and until there is an effort put into the making that more level, no playoff system is better than any other.

Talk to any coach and ask them. Those 3 weeks of bowl practice are HUGE given the limits imposed by the NCAA during the spring and fall.

Plus, are we really complaining about MORE FOOTBALL??? Bowl season is awesome because you take about a 15 day break from football, then watch 35 football games between Dec 20 and Jan 8th or so. Why is this a problem again?

I completely disagree, as does every coach that goes to a bowl. They get a minimum of 2 weeks extra practice. It is basically like having spring practice in the fall.

Plus, I get to watch college football every night for about a month.

No one is forcing you to watch.

I guarantee that deep down, in non-public moments, the AD's of the schools that play in lower-level bowls would just as soon have their teams not play. The exposure is great, but bowls can be a financial nightmare for schools with borderline athletic budgets to begin with. By the time you travel, stay in a hotel, pay for meals for everyone, house a band and feed them, etc., the bowls are a money drain.

This is stupid stupid stupid.

What about the players??

The ADs and schools make money year round on these players, and if they have to take a bit of a hit to let the players and fans enjoy the bowl experience, I say fricking deal with it.

The players of programs that will never sniff a BCS title, or conference title for that matter, get to play in a postseason game with pride and bragging rights, and even a trophy on the line.

Anything that happens to take away from that would be ruining everything that college football is.

LSU fans have forgotten what it was like to be thrilled to be ranked and in bowl contention at all.

Even after a down year, you can celebrate your team and players, and use the game to build hope and momentum for the next season.

Anyone who can't see that just isn't a college football fan. Plain and simple.

The bowls are run by private entities, so the bowl games are indeed exhibitions, except for the NC game. I agree there are WAY too many bowls, which give us a lot of crappy matchups, but I generally love the bowls at the end of the season. It gives us a lot of cross-country matchups that we'd rarely see in the regular season.

This, and I get to make my annual $50 dollar donation to someone else in the bowl pool.

Thats funny... year after year schools keep accepting bids. It isn't like they HAVE to accept them, but they do. If it was a true drain, they'd just refuse the bid.

Is there another team sport where you can win every game on your schedule and NOT win a championship??

You do realize they are doing away with the BCS and starting a 4 team playoff in 2014 right?

I guess I could have explained a little better. I was thinking b-ball because you could win every ga,e, but still notg et an NCAA bid and end up in the NIT, but then as I thought about it, if you won your conference tourney you'd get the autommatic bid. Unless there is a lower conference without a conference tourney. If there is, then it is "possible" I would think.

I don't watch any bowl games except LSU game and NCG. I would, however, watch all college playoff games.
