If you remember correctly, OU ran Venables out of town before he was picked up by Dabo at Clemson.

OU. The laughing stock of CFB when it comes to defending an offense basically fired Brent Venables for lack of production.

The rest is history. Your environment and context is always key with hires like these. It's one of the reasons why Ed Orgeron, who many believed would never be a HC again after Ole Miss, just won a freaking National Championship.

I just see this as another former "Big 12 Powerhouse" firing their HC/DC prematurely because they had unrealistic expectations when Pelini was winning 9 games a season.

I'll be on record saying he has learned a lot this past decade and will thrive in the role he was born to do... defensive coordinator. He has all the resources to produce top-10 defenses at LSU again. And he will be doing it for a long time. I do not believe he'll just jump back as a HC with all the trouble he dealt with leading a team.

I trust in Coach O to get the very best and to cut ties if he knows it won't work out.

I mean, I think it's more likely he does a really good job for 2-3 years and then gets another head job.

But, I wouldn't mind this version.

Have an upvote.

Just wait until the first time the defense gives up a 3rd down and we get 30 different threads about 3rd and Pelini and how we're gonna lose.

He's gonna blitz with Jacoby Stevens and Marcel Brooks like he used to with Laron Landry and Chad Jones. Straight up the gut!

Bob Stoops rehired his brother, Mike Stoops, which caused Venables to leave because he didn't want to be co-DC.

Venables and Pelini were co-DCs on that 2004 OU team, by the by.

And somewhat oddly enough, Venables replaced Kevin Steele at Clemson.

Maybe he is better already considering the schedule Clemson plays.

Hope so

That’s obviously the model we’re shooting for here

OU had very good defenses during that time. Their defensive woes are a more recent thing. They had a pretty solid 10 year run on defense from roughly 1999 to 2009 if my memory serves me me

This isn't true.

Venables did not want to share DC responsibility with a co-DC. Oklahoma fans and players loved Brent and went into nuclear melt when he was allowed to walk because Bob refused to allow Venables to be the sole DC, and insisted that Mark co-DC.

I despise Oklahoma but I'll give credit where it's due... the entire organization and fan base wanted Brent to stay because they knew how good he was with the right personnel... but Bob was the shot caller.

Oh it's probably going to happen the first time we give up 15 or more yards on a single play

Once coachw gets out of the depression clinic, he will tell us all why this is a poor hire.

"Pelini isn't worth $2 million. He needs to start earning his money!"
