Funny when I was younger ('80's and '90's), they replayed it every Halloween night and before every LSU/Ole Miss game.

The play of the game in '59 was NOT necessarily the punt return by Billy Cannon but the goal line stop he leveled on the last play of the game to win it for the FIGHTIN' Tigers

I wonder if I'm the only poster on TD to have watched both Y.A. And Billy Cannon play in Tiger Stadium.

I had a guy tell me a few years ago his dad was in the box with the announcer (I believe it was Ferguson then) and when the mic goes out people thinks its because of the noise but the announcer turned the wrong knob and he actually turned the mic down.

Not what he said. He said he is the second fastest man in college 'track and field' (which would imply much faster than 2nd fastest man in college football). Don't know who the fastest man in college track and field was that year, but I am sure he didn't play football.

It was not just stopping Johnny Reb on the last play of the game, they actually had first & goal inside the 5 yrd line & that was one of the epic goal line stands in LSU history. Cannon, RB, Robinson, RB, and Rabb, the QB made the stand, as back then players played both ways. Paul Deitzel always said that to him, the most remarkable thing bout the game was how hot & humid it was and for Cannon to make that run after playing both ways the entire game was "unbelievable". Both teams were punting on 1 & 2nd downs the whole second half the defenses were so dominating.

I was in the student section as a freshman (no one left that night!). The goal line stand was by far the most excruciating of all the game. Doug Elmore ran the ball and Warren Rabb and Cannon stopped him on about the 3 or 4 yard line.

By the way trying to be a smarty but , this was even more amazing because Rabb was not a defensive guy in high school. By the NCAA rules of limited substitution he learned to ply defensive back at LSU. The White Team had to go both ways. Rabb was picked on that year because the other corner was Johney Robinson.

Dietzel had a golden rule about punting. When inside his own ?? yd. line, the Tigers would punt on 3rd down. Can't remember if it was 30 or 40 yd line???

To the previous question, saw Cannon, Robinson, Taylor, Rabb, et.al. play starting in '57 multiple times. Not old enough to have seen Tittle though. My dad saw Cannon's run w/6 of his buddies that drove over from SW LA. Halloween '59, they watched the goal line stand about 10 rows up right there.
