I'm too young to have ever seen him play, but it seems as though everyone remembers him in their heads as being the most lightning fast player ever. Things like, "By the time Cannon was a sophomore at LSU, he measured 6-foot-1 and weighed 200 pounds. He could run a 9.4 100-yard dash..." ( LINK)
I found this pretty interesting in watching a video about the famous Halloween night TD. CHeck out the line judge about half way through the return. LINK
Now is that just the fastest ref to ever put on the stripes, or are reports of ole' billy's speed game a little inflated? Honest question.

i don't think that's an actual referee, forgot the story behind it though.

He's a high stepping fool...but that play was late in the game & I'm sure both teams were a bit tired

Leonard would have smoked Billy Cannon.

The guy running isn't an actual ref but a fan who jumped on the field wearing something that looked similar to a refs uni, if I remember correctly

this does not make sense
in 1958 the white team sometimes played defense.
they played "both ways"
cannon made the game saving tackle at the end
billy cannon won the hundred yard dash AND the shot put in the same sec meet he was a freak of nature

Also it was on a torn up, probably damp field, and he had run about 120 yards altogether by the end of the punt return.

Cannon fielded the punt on the bounce at the 11 yard line. He ran a fairly straight path. Maybe ran 100 yards total on the play.
The fake ref was an Ole Miss fan, not an LSU fan. And he didn't jump out of the stands. He actually came off the end of the Ole Miss bench, where he had been sitting.
He was a high school football official from Mississippi and used his uniform as a way of sneaking into the game, passing himself off as an actual game official. Apparently, the real officials saw him, asked him who he was; and he told them the truth. They just laughed and let him stay.
He said when Cannon fielded the punt, he got up and started running. Maybe he had a feeling. That game ranks as one of the toughest tickets ever in Tiger Stafium history

he was the best @ the time - good person then & now -
the dude running on the sideline was from jackson, ms - could not buy a ticket, put his referee outfit on & went thru the "pass" gate & was in. the head of the crew doing the game, saw him on the bench & asked who he was, the guy came clean. crew chief laughed & told him to stay out the way.
the "white" team played defense also - and
was on the field stopping a long ole miss drive ,as time ran out - cannon & the qb, warren rabb - made the stop on fourth down on the goal line
cannon was a sprinter, shot putter, and could have been a world class weight lifter, if he had put his time to do it

Cannon was before my time, but if he ran a legit 9.4 at his size, then that was incredibly impressive. That was in the 1950's, too.
You can't get much faster than 9.4.
