Biggest mistake college football fans (even analysts) make.

They think margin of victory means something, it doesn't. It is only true that a team with more talent has a better chance of winning, otherwise, the outcome of each game depends of how the team executes in a given game (including turnovers). LSU can make a top 25 team like Washington look like a high school team one day and beat a terrible Auburn team 12-10, not dominate Towson; outplay Alabama, and beat good teams like A&M, SC, and play a close game vs Ole Miss. Just take a look at margin of victories for the current #1 team (ND). Beating Ole Miss in a close game does not mean we are not capable of beating any top 10 team on any given day. Did you ever think K Sate loses to Baylor by 5 TDs? So, rankings, discussions, and projections purely based on who you beat and by how much is worthless. If you have enough talent to be competitive with good teams anything can happen.

I agree. But, for the lack of a "knockout" playoff system, style points are one of the indicator's of a team's strength. It's difficult to gauge what the exact result will be before the game is played, so analysts and fans, alike have to look at how teams have fared in previous games.
It's really for lack of a better way to access or predict the outcome of a game, really. But, games aren't played on paper.

Well, in CFB, the "transitive property" exists. So it really does matter, just not insofar as gauging how god or great a team is.

i think who you beat is the true indicator of team strength, not style points. as far as a "knockout" playoff system what do you think the regular season is? 8 teams would be sufficient for a ultra fair determinant of the crown but that ends up to be 16 games. for college kids thats over the top.

It exists for disparaging teams with equal records.
UGA has 1 loss. We have 2. Record comes first. Transitive property a secondary factor.

What you hear a lot of today is the "eyeball" test. 
Forget records, who they played, when they played them, etc. it is the all meaning "eyeball" test. How does a team look? They just look better than another team.
Until we have a true playoff in CFB we'll always get the stupidity of the polls.

My point is not just with regards to polls and rankings, it also about how some fans react to outcome of a given game. A poster said LSU is a top 3 team while another poster replied "we are not, we just barely beat Ole Miss". What I am saying is you can be the best team in the country and still barely beat a team like Ole Miss in one game.

Good teams find ways to win games, but lets be honest, Ole Miss barely has enough decent scholarship players to compete against mid level SEC teams. LSU beat Auburn and Ole Miss but the games do say something about the team.
Just haven't been able to put it together. Defense was great, offense was down. Now we have a reverse of that problem.
Scores may not tell that much but the games do. I think this team has done very well to only have two losses this year. Definitely a sign of a good team to overcome adversity

Style points yes but not margin of victory. LSU had a lot of style points in the Ole Miss game despite narrow margin of victory. Believe it or not this game made LSU more attractive for Bowl games.

I think another point is in if the person judging actually watched the game, or if they just picked up the paper and checked the score.
If you didn't know anything about OU and Stanford and watched that game last night you would have said the better team had won, the higher ranked team had won, and that Stanford was lucky to get out of there with a win.

Explain to me how LSU has 2 close losses to top 5 teams, but Kansas state gets slaughtered by an unranked Baylor team with a record under .500 and they are ahead of us.
