re: Big Picture Issue with LSU Recruiting

Here's the deal. Miles is a great recruiter. From kickers in Australia to deep snappers from Ga. He rarely misses on getting the very best talent for his teams.
But QB is the one spot that he is struggling with.
Lets see why can this be.
Louisiana rarely develops a SEC caliber QB anymore.
Miles wants to control the game by running the ball and playing great defense.
4 and 5 * OOS QB's are not lining up to leave state and not be the focal point of the offense, anywhere. They can hand off for the state school.
It seems we have 3 choices.
Develop some dang QB's in this state. Heck we only need 1 every 2 years....!!!!!!!
Change offenses
Stay the course.....

Not this again! Franks and hopefully Patterson coming real soon but lets not give up on Jennings and Harris. They both were highly recruited! I think you will see improvement this year at the QB position.

Kind of like JJ and JL when they were juniors and seniors?
Has that been the norm or exception with older QBs at LSU?

With the film that's out there on Jennings..I don't believe he could transfer to Tulane.
Wasn't turnover Driskel a sought-after QB when he wanted to transfer? Also the QB Tyler Murphy from UF who played last year. Worst stats then Jennings (albeit much higher cmp%) and played 2014 at Boston College. I'm very confident in saying that if Jennings transferred, no less than 5 D1 schools and at least one power 5 school, would be interested in him.
Maybe he is a late bloomer, or maybe he would be better in a spread offense, or maybe he will never improve, but at least there would be several schools looking to scoop him up. If he graduates next year, he could transfer anywhere he wants and play his senior season, provided Miles allows him.

There's like 2 or 3 bonafide elite high school QB prospects in any given year, out of hundreds to thousands of QBs. The rest is a damn crapshoot.
And you think failing to land these guys is "neglecting" to recruit the position? You don't think every other school wants those guys too?

Yes i believe LSU is not putting the same amount of effort and research into recruiting QBs as other positions. I believe the past 10 years of results proves my point.
We went after cardale Jones, jt Barrett, Jeremy Johnson, mason Rudolph, Jerrod heard, de shone kizer, cooper Bateman, cord Sandberg, gunner Kiel, Connor brewer, Trevor knight.
The list goes on and on.
This class we are going to sign a two time state champion qb in the highest division in Texas.
Louisiana just doesn't produce qbs. We are losing out of teams like UT, Tamu, OU, ND, auburn, tOSU and bama. And usually it is because those schools are closer to home.

How Jefferson may have played his best game as a freshman?
Jeffersons best game was the hurting he put on Tamu in the 2010 cotton bowl.

God forbid we have a major injury or off the field issue that would take away 1 of our only 2 valid options at QB.

Miles also has trouble because his elementary school offense is a turnoff to many QBs.

Not to mention we also have Zadock Dinklemann committed in 2018. That kid is the next Todd frickin Marinovich without the mental issues and drugs. Miles has issues with development, but don't ever talk about his recruiting, cause then you are just talking out of your arse.

Miles can recruit with the best of them, no doubt about that.

Explain to me then how Jennings regressed last year? How Jefferson may have played his best game as a freshman?
I don't know, it may demonstrate that the defenses of Bama, Arkansas and Ole Miss Re better than those of Sam Houston and ULM. Maybe.
I would rather focus on Lee and his development from a turnover machine into a decent QB, and Jefferson threw for 162 yards on like 30 attempts that magical game, Jennings threw for 150 on 14 attempts against ND..y'all remember shite funny.

No but finding a good 3 or 4* guy somewhere in the country at the beginning of last year could help for 2016 or 2017 maybe even 18? We really should have 4 or 5 guys in all classes every year or at least try.

Then the staff needs to recruit the guys on the depth chart too. Don't let them leave. Don't tell them we going in a diff direction bc you never know. Ohio State had 3 quality guys on roster and it sure helped them. UCLA has like 6 Scholarship guys. Why can't lsu?

Well I think ball control and running the fb has more to do with the original problem of not having a good QB lol

I think the recruitment, signing, and development of a bunch of 17-18 year olds is more complicated that you are making it out to be.
I totally agree there. But can you agree we've been really bad at it when it comes to the QB position?
Actually, I can't. We haven't been "bad" at it, but I would agree that we have not been as good as we would like to be. However, the "evidence" (and I use that term lightly when it comes to recruiting analysis, but that's all we've got) strongly indicates that the weakness is in the development (or, as others mentioned, retention) rather than the recruiting and signing. We are recruiting the same guys that Meyer, Saban, Kelly, Fisher, etc., are recruiting and signing more than out fair share. And on multiple occasions we have had commensurate production from the QB position (Mett 2013, Lee in 2011, Flynn, etc.).

We ranked 2nd to last in QB play (yards/TDs/rating) ahead of Driskel and FLA and dead last in SEC completion percentage at 48.8% (121st in the nation out of 123 QBs rated according to ESPN). I get that Jennings is still learning/developing, but considering teams load the box to stop the run due to no threat from our passing game we should be able to at least break the 50% completion barrier.
There's plenty of blame to go around. Some is skill. Some is development. Some is putting your QB in a position to succeed.
I would think this is something everyone can agree on.
