Best position change in LSUFB History? Martin, Reed, Spears, Webster, or Harold Perkins?

Any others in the conversation? We've had some OL and DL switch but nobody really became elite off the top of my head.

Devin White doesn't count b/c he was never going to get to play RB here. We just lied to him about that to recruit him (worked out well for him and probably made him $50-70M).

*ETA: forgot Webster. Adding to title

*ETA: added Spears even though he was never going to finish his career at TE at LSU

It was before my time, and I don't know how he did, but Marcus Spears came as a TE right. Changed to DL.

Also Joseph Barksdale came in as DT made the move to OT.

JC Copeland made a huge impact for us as FB, came in as DE or LB.

Quinn Johnson LB to FB.

Wasn’t Spears the top TE in the country in HS?

No. DE all the way. Similar to D White being a "running back"

Not Jack Hunt but the guy who caught the ball in Kentucky was a RB and became a WR.

He was more of a RB anyway

Perkins was LB all the way too. I don’t recall any of the services rating him anywhere else.

Not sure on the angle here but HP was a LB recruit, so doesn't seem to fit the theme of what you're going with.

He's not playing LB though. He's an edge.

Devery Henderson

In the honorable mention tier.

Dev was good but he's not in that upper echelon like Reed or Webster (or what Perkins projects to be)

He plays LB. He lines up at edge in situations.

Besides “edge” encompasses several different base positions, linebacker being one.

Perkins is playing drop linebacker. It’s while you see him in coverage every once in a while. He’s just rushing off the edge as a drop linebacker every once in a while.

Here’s the missing link from Tepper’s defense.

Spears was not DE all the way. Saban told him he could make more money at DE than TE, and he made the switch. I would say he fits the description better than Perkins. In fact, Perkins may be edge as you say, but in today’s football that’s as likely to be a LB as a DE.

Maybe we could let the man play more than a handful of games before anointing him the messiah? Just let him do his thing and continue to be amazed.

He primarily lines up at edge and is sometimes moved inside for pressure or to disguise him spying.

Rushing/edge contain and spying is probably 95% of all of his plays.
