I'm surprised Y.A. Tittle isnt on this list.

Yikes, Jordy H just said on his show that he saw Bert Jones throw a football from the goal line into the opposite stands. Lol. He added, "about 130 yards, I'm not exaggerating".

Now, I remember Jones and he certainly had a gun but, really strong arm QBs throw it 70 to 80 yards in the air. Why would Jordy say such a thing and be so adamant about it? I think it happened when he was young and got confused but still, terrible idea to share that story. Almost delusional.

About damned time. Bert was a god QB who was misused, AND remains a great person. Trust me, if he had it to do over, he would have went somewhere other than LSU. Mac and him seemed to have issues from the time he came in to finish the Orange Bowl as a sub for Buddy Lee who was injured.

He could have been better utilized, and granted, that was a lot of pressure to put on a sophomore in such a major game. He really did not get the starting job until Notre Dame came to town.

Only career-ending injuries have prevented Bert from making it into Canton. Hopefully the veteran's committee will follow up on that now that he's in the CFHoF.

Go back and read your first statement, and you debunked your own argument. Bert Jones had Pro Football Hall of Fame talent, but he was not a Pro Football Hall of Fame QB. He was an outstanding pro quarterback on a full-time basis for about three seasons (1975-77). He was not a full-time starter before then and was a part-timer after that because of injuries.

He is a worthy College Football Hall of Famer.

Don't think so. With the receivers we have now and a running back stable we have, our offense would hum.
Remember back when Bert played, they didn't throw the ball like they do now. You almost never had more than two wideouts. But TEs were used more. In '71, I believe a TE was the second leading receiver.
Bert Jones being elected to the College HOF is well deserved and overdue.
I have heard him speak several times about his LSU days...he has some great stories.
My favorite is about the time he had gone duck hunting with some teammates and Mac caught them cleaning the ducks in the stadium shower. He said Coach Mac just shook his head and laughed !!!!!

No fricking way. However, that said, he would have better receivers this time around, and if CLM stayed out of the way, the offense would hum like a fricking 16 cylinder. However, I get the feeling that this coaching staff would find a way to frick it up, if for no other reason because of Bert being Caucasian.

Make no bones about it, though, in terms of raw talent Bert Jones was the best QB for LSU.

The thing that people need to remember was that Mac had several assistants who needed to be shown the door and Mac wouldn't do it. Those assistants did not do Mac any favors.

Paul Lyons had played QB in high school but was initially moved to defensive back at LSU. Butch Duhe's sudden death moved things up ahead of schedule. Buddy Lee started, and Bert (a sophomore) backed him up. When Bert got thrown into the Orange Bowl against Penn St, I doubt that he had really gotten many reps in practice, and the game really couldn't be hung on him. We could have won that sonofabitch if Mac and crew had done a better job of game planning. I know Mac was a neat guy and had his successes, but the game was passing him by. However, another bad streak of luck happened when Mike Miley decided to go pro in baseball after Spring practice. Otherwise, Mac and crew had installed the Veer offense just tailored for him in what would be his senior year. We wound up with Carl Otis Trimble (who couldn't pass) and Billy Broussard, who would have been alternating with Miley, and probably should have played exclusively instead of trying to force a two QB when there really wasn't a second QB. Pat Lyons (younger brother of Paul) would come in and alternate for awhile with Bobby Moreau, but they quickly figured out that Moreau wasn't college QB material and put him on defense where he was much more successful. Lyons finished his career on his own, although without that good of a supporting cast in terms of players AND coaching assistants. His career ended with an injury which led to the entry of to sophomore QBs - Emsminger and Woodley.

Naturally, the Saints traded with Baltimore and got all time great DL Billy Newsome and the Colts used the pick to draft Bert. He was an incredible talent and competitor. I remember his run ins with Pittsburgh's D-Linemen.
My childhood hero!

Pat Lyons had some decent talent around him. Terry Robiskie, Charles Alexander, Mike Quintella et al weren't that bad. We tied number 1 Nebraska 6-6 with Pat and these guys.
