BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Kentucky was predicted to win the 2016 Southeastern Conference men's basketball championship in voting by a select panel of both SEC and national media members.

The Wildcats are the overall preseason favorite for the 11th time since the 1998-99 season.

LSU freshman Ben Simmons was the choice of the media for SEC Men's Basketball Player of the Year. Simmons becomes just the second freshman chosen as preseason player of the year by the media, joining Kentucky's Julius Randle in 2013-14. Florida's Dorrian Finney-Smith, Kentucky's Tyler Ulis, Texas A&M's Danuel House and Vanderbilt's Damian Jones also received votes in the Player of the Year voting.

House, Jones, Simmons and Ulis were each All-SEC First Team selections along with Kentucky's Skal Labissiere and Ole Miss's Stefan Moody.

Points were compiled on a 14-13-12-11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis. Each media member also voted for a five-player All-SEC Team. Ties were not broken.

The 2015-16 campaign begins November 13, with conference play set to begin January 2. The 2016 SEC Tournament will be March 9-13 at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn.

I still really think the SEC could be won in Rupp the last weekend of the season when LSU heads there. A little surprised but not entirely that we were picked behind Vandy and aTm. Texas A&M has brought in some serious talent. We have to play them better than we did last year.

I think the top 4 teams in the SEC are pretty clear. Damn it's gonna be a fun season.

look, I'm as excited as everyone else about this year, but is there anything more silly than pre-season predictions and pre-season all-conference teams. We haven't played one single second of basketball yet.

I realize it's just to get folks talking, but it's always seemed silly pay any attention to all of this.

Let's see how we (and Simmons) actually play on the court and then we'll know.

And again, I'm pumped about this year.

I'm not ready to just hand UK the SEC title this season. This year's team looks much closer to the '12-'13 and '13-'14 teams than they do to last year's juggernaut. Plus, who knows if their best player will even be eligible?

I surprised that Vandy is picked #2. Yes they return a ton of guys from last year; Yes, they finished last season strong; Yes, Kevin Stallings is a good coach. But 2nd? Top four, absolutely. 2nd? no

I would have put A&M 2nd or maybe even first. They return their two best players and add a top-10 recruiting class.

LSU could have been anywhere from 2nd to 4th. I sill think they are better (talent wise) than Vandy.

Regardless of the order, there is a huge drop-off from #4 to #5 and below. One thing is for sure. We find out how good LSU is in a hurry once SEC play starts. A brutal opening two games @ Vandy; home against UK

I'll watch and enjoy the year, and I expect big things from Simmons and our team.

But I'm just taking a pass on all the pre-season clickbait.

This will only fuel my desire and passion, and while you're sitting in your recliner being hesitant about cheering for our team, I'll be telling the ref to get off his knees because he sucks.

There's no reason to not get excited before the season starts. What's the point of living if you can't get excited about the future?

You guys are arguing about two different things. One can be excited about the upcoming season but also be rational enough to not base unrealistic expectations for the team/players off of preseason predictions

For instance, I'm excited to see Simmons play. But I can't EXPECT him to be SEC POTY without him having played one game of college basketball yet. Preseason accolades are nice, but ultimately meaningless
