First year basketball head coach Will Wade promised “a new normal” for LSU. His first official practice certainly had a new look to it.

Five of his seven new players joined seven returners on the floor Friday for a 45-minute session open to the media, in addition to a longer portion not open to the press. Before practice, the team spent time meditating, a tool Wade himself utilizes.

The Zen stopped at the door, though, as the session was packed with energy and uptempo drill work. After a warm up, the team ran through several half court sets. Wade divided his teams into Gold and Purple.

The tennis ball drill is legit.

If I had told you a year ago that we would be a better basketball team than football in 2017, I would've had me account cancelled. Now, if it's not the absolute truth, it's damn close.

Man I hope Wade isn't setting himself up for a lot of disappointment. So many people love his work effort, what he demands of his players, his recruiting, etc. that I fear that this still might not result in a lot of wins his first season. We are still depending on two bigs who showed brief moments of brilliance but no consistency last season.

Wade says we can shoot and that is not a problem but it was last season. We will still need a bunch of threes to go in and even more importantly we will need to deny a bunch of threes from the other teams.

I am always optimistic about LSU basketball but after Trent and Johnny it is a very cautious optimism.

That's fair. Is a .500 record in conference play out of the question for basketball? If it's not, the basketball winning percentage could very well be higher than football this year.

If so, that's isn't Wade's fault. It would be the fault of fans having unrealistic expectations for year 1. This team has some talent. But it also has some holes.

The SEC is an improving league (assuming no HC's get canned in this FBI investigation). If Wade can get 8 conf wins it wouldn't be a bad year.

Anyone EXPECTING a postseason tournament appearance is setting themselves up for disappointment. That talk can (likely) start next year

Wait, are those fundamental drills they are working on? WTF? I thought basketball practice was supposed to be a shoot around then a pickup game.

Really need Brandon Sampson to put it all together and have a breakout year.

Offense needs improvement from last year, but that was not our downfall. Defense was historically bad. The good news is, unlike offense, defense doesn't take as much pure talent to improve. It is amazing how much a good system, fundamentals and effort can improve a defensive player from one year to the next.

If we have similar offensive production as last year (I get it Blakney is gone) and improved 10-12 ppg on the defensive side of the ball, we will be an NIT/bubble team. For reference, we gave up 83 ppg last year and averaged 74.

For reference in 08-09 TJ's first year, we gave up 66 per game and scored 74.

They basically worked on defense all summer. I think Waters will play a lot.
