Hey there fellow Tigers.

I will be attending my first LSU football game with my parents on August 31. We are all big Tiger fans, but have never been to a game, especially since after we moved to NC following Katrina. So basically, I just wanted to ask some general questions about the overall experience down there and what to expect.

I guess my first question is how early should we get down there (it is a 6:30pm kickoff) and where are the best places to park? Where are the tailgates and what is the policy regarding alcohol at said tailgates? I also don't want to mooch off of anyone serving food at the tailgates, so I was wondering if there were any places to eat around campus during this time?

And lastly, my parents are on the older side and probably need a place to cool down; I'm expecting it to be extremely hot/humid down there, so are there any places that would be sufficient for them to take a breather?

I apologize for all the questions, I just wanted to get a better picture before we head down there. Your responses are greatly appreciated!

If this is a priority, I would tailgate somewhere near the student union. One of the few buildings on campus that will be open and you'll have access to A/C.

Considering your parents are older, probably don't want to get there TOO early.

Regarding alcohol, flows very freely at the tailgates.

Regarding food and parking, might wanna park near walk ons. Food, ac, and parking in one spot. But it's a decent walk to and from the stadium.
My parents couldn't do it, but they're 81 and 82. I'd say 10 years ago they could've.

Also excellent advice. There's also food at the union and you won't have to walk as far

How early you need to arrive depends on: A) if you have a parking pass B) what you are hoping to take in/do during the day C) how much walking you plan to do.

Best places to park will depend on all those same things. There is parking maps that will lay out what is free and what is paid. If you are planning to eat, and not have to walk far, that will play into where you park. So, you will need to answer more questions in order to get a better answer.

The tailgates are literally everywhere. Regarding alcohol, just don't walk around drinking in glass bottles. That's basically it. Other than that rule, you are free to do whatever.

On the Nicholson side you have walk ons. On the highland side, there is a lot more. Chimes, Buffalo Wild Wings, Burger King, Cane's, five guys and plenty more on that end. Depending on where you want to eat, should depend on where you park. Otherwise you could be walking far to eat.

It's going to be hot. Probably ridiculously hot. On the highland side the student Union and stuff is close by. That has food and would also give you a break from the heat. You won't be escaping the heat totally though, and even at 6:30 the game will be miserably hot.

Yes, Student Union is your friend where they have A/C, TV, and toilets. Also, the Barnes and Noble across the street with lots of Tiger stuff to purchase. The first time I went in there two years ago and saw all of the LSU apparel, I experienced sensory overload

Warning to you: if you are seated on the east side of the stadium, the late afternoon sun can be very hot. Sunscreen and hydration advised.

Not sure about parking. That situation seems to change yearly, if not monthly. I live close to campus in BR so I usually will ride my bike, get an uber or just walk if the weather is nice.

As for tailgate rules, fear of mooching, etc. just forget about it. If you're not a dick and you approach a tailgate telling them its your first game, you're a La. native who left for Katrina, etc., 99/100 tailgates will welcome you with open arms, feed you and shower you with alcohol. That said, it never hurts to bring a little cooler or bottle of your own.

Since you will have your somewhat older parents with you I'd advise staying in the general area of the parade ground/fraternity row/the quad. That means easier access to bars and restaurants on highland road and chimes street where yall can cool down. City Slice and The Chimes are a couple spots right there with good food and drink.

If you are staying in downtown BR you may want to consider taking the city bus to the game (assuming they are offering the service again). I think they start transporting people to the campus roughly 3 hours before kickoff. It will definitely be hot and humid, so with older parents 3 hours before kickoff would probably be more than enough time to hangout. Even if you are not staying in downtown BR, you can still drive and park downtown to catch the bus. Be warned, the BR (CATS) bus is like most government run entities in that it is not exactly a model of efficiency. Nonetheless, it saves you from having to fight the hassle of parking in ever decreasing available space. However, if you have a parking pass, driving is preferable.

Tailgates are spread out all over campus. Find a big one (or several big parties), tell them this is your first experience and I'm certain the hosts will be more than happy to provide you with all the food and drinks you want.

The only real pregame item of note (before getting into the stadium) is watching the band march down the hill into the stadium. That usually occurs about 1.5 hours before kickoff (if I recall correctly). Otherwise, I'd make sure I'm in my seats at least 30 minutes before kickoff to watch the pregame pomp and circumstance.

If you wait until after 1:00 pm you will spend all your pregame time finding a parking place and you not be anywhere near the stadium.

Parking passes can be had on Stubhub, that way Parental Units may not have to walk so far

Hi Tiger.
1. There is no too early timeline. I think they usually put up sawhorses and barricades around 11 a.m. or noon at certain entrances to campus, so it's best to try to get on campus before then.

2. We usually park around the Student Rec Center or Herget Hall lots off of W. Lakeshore behind and across from the canal behind Sorority Row. It's a 5 minute walk to the LSU Union from there. The Union has many things to do and see. It's like a big living room with large screen TVs, restaurants, etc.

3. Tailgates are literally, everywhere. There are tents and canopies and tailgates: on the Parade Grounds in front of the Union, across from the LSU Ag Center on the other side of the Union, in front of the Memorial Tower, all along Dalrymple leading in to the Indian Mounds area, behind the Law Center, in front of the Greek Ampitheater, by the Indian Mounds and in front of Allen Hall, etc.

4. Places to eat: there is like a Food Court in the LSU Union with several places to eat. Also The Chimes right off campus, and in front of the PMAC across from the Stadium and in the PMAC during the TAF Pregame Tailgate inside the PMAC with the band, beer, food.

5. You cam cool down in the LSU Union, and in the shade around the Memorial Tower/Quad. There are a few shady spots in between the PMAC and the Stadium as there are trees around there. Mike's Habitat and Gift Shop are two more places near there you can rest.
