Auburn got 5 downs in one series in the Red Zone of last year's game. I can't quite remember what quarter because the YouTube video of it got deleted but I remember it was the series that Arden Key and Godchaux combined for the sack in the Red Zone. Their sack was supposed to be on 4th down but Auburn got two second down plays in a row and a 3rd down before that and no one noticed, not even ESPN said anything during the broadcast. Auburn then kicked a field goal on "5th" down.

Found a link, start at 35 minute mark

kind of rings a bell, but still, let it go, move on, can't be undone

No they didn't. This was discussed in numerous threads after the game. The announcers said one of the plays was a first down, but in reality it was not. It was still 2nd down. On the next play, Auburn made a first down and they only had 4 downs when they scored. You can look at the sideline marker to see. The ESPN announcers made a mistake and never cleared up their comments.

I somehow doubt this. But if you've got some evidence I'm all ears/eyes

So it would have ended in a field goal anyway?

You people need to chill with the everyone hates LSU. Here's the cold hard truth, LSU doesn't lose games beccause of the refs being biased . They lose games because they got outplayed and out coached.

None of this changes the fact that Les wss running out the clock on that last drive like the game was tied.

You are right. But sometimes refs make mistakes. They made a mistake here, as has happened in a few other games.
In this case, Auburn had the following plays:
1st and 10 from the 13-gain of 4
2nd and 6 from the 9-gain of 2
3rd and 4 from the 7-gain of 3
4th and 1 from the 4-sack, loss of 9
5th---field goal

And as I recall, the Rant did notice at the time...at least a few posters.

Their 1st down play was actually a 2nd down play, which they got the 1st down on.

quote: Wow! Refs screwed up but so did our coaching staff for not noticing. I watched the game and didn't notice either. They only people who screwed up were the guys in the trailer for ESPN. 0:26 left in the 1st quarter, they get a first down at the 38, making the 28 the line to get. Ran once to the 35 then the field flipped to start the 2nd quarter. 2nd quarter starts. 2nd and 7 from the 35. This is where things got dicey. The run picks up about 7, very close to the first. ESPN treats it as a first, but the chains don't move and Auburn is running the hurry up. On 3rd and inches, they pick up about 8 to the 20. First down and 10 from the 20: 7 yards to the 13. 2nd and 3: picks up 4 to the 9, First and goal. 1st down: 2 yards up the gut 2nd down: 2 yards around the end on the read option 3rd down: sack for a loss of 7 4th down: Field goal

Oh, I see your point. On the 2nd and 7 toss sweep right from the 35 that went out of bounds a couple plays before, it looked like the ref put his foot over the 1st down marker at the 28, but they never panned out to show whether the chains moved. That must have been 3rd and inches (weird that they didn't measure). ESPN said they gave him that 1st down, but i guess they didn't. That changes the play count. I stand corrected.

They didn't get 5 down, although it does appear that way. While obviously ESPN screwed this up I think the referees actually caused this to happen. The crew was so hell bent of allowing Auburn to run their hurry offense as fast as possible that they didn't allow the chain gang to to get set when Auburn got a first down. Which they clear should and are supposed to do. IMO this is what cause this confusion.

Yes refs do make mistakes but some on here act as if the refs are out to sabatoge LSU, the conspiracies really take off against Bama. Alabama has just been better at football the last 6 years and that's all there is to it. Superior coaching and getting dominated on the LOS will get you beat every time .
