Seems like this would be the perfect year to pull wholesale DL substitutions. Like the Cholly Mac days, it serves a purpose for moral and to freak the OL out.

I think they sub pretty often, but not the whole line.

Let just play the best players both ways because that's what Cholly Mac did.

OR....Instead of reading up, I can just listen to my father. Who was a d-lineman for Charlie Mac...

Well... Let's confer..

Purpose was to: Give starters a blow. Get guys who don't play a lot a chance to show what they can do. Puts fresh legs in. Raises moral of entire team.

In this years team, it would be subbing great with great. I think it would have a shock and awe affect on tiring O lines.

I hate to take KeKe out for anything though

Most Freshmen Linemen are not ready to compete in the SEC. So, platooning a bunch of guys in is taking the best talent off the field. The coaches already know what they can do. They wear their asses out in practice to determine this.

Maybe not. If anything it would be a break from the pounding of a first round draft pick.

And: Paul Dietzel coached the Chinese Bandits, not Charlie Mac. Substitution Rules were different then, and did not change back until the mid 60s.

Charles Youmans McClendon, also known as Charlie or "Cholly Mac," was an American football player and coach. He served at the head coach at Louisiana State University from 1962 to 1979.

My dad says Charlie...so I do too.

LSU played 19 freshman or redshirt freshman vs Washington. This staff does not share your strategy.

It would be neat to have a Chinese Bandit sub package as a salute to the '58 team, even if it were for just one game.

I remember we did this against Florida in 1997. Anybody remember if it was just for that game or the entire season?

We have the numbers on the DL to do it. The only drawback I can think of is if Chavis wants particular personnel subs at certain times, possibly depending on the offensive peronnel.

I love when the band plays Chinese Bandits

NCAA substitution rule at the time: If a player is in the game at the start of a quarter, he could be replaced and then return ONLY ONCE in that period.

The end result might have been to give the starters a blow, fresh legs, etc., but that wasn't the purpose of bringing in the Chinese Bandits, which was an entire squad - not just the DL. The purpose was to mitigate the effects of the substitution rule.

I'm pretty sure you understand this, but the title and OP contradict each other.

I think Les/Chavis don't need to change anything about the defense.
