Ray Ratto is longtime AP poll veteran.
He covers mostly baseball because usually the Bay Area CFB teams aren't that great...and the Bay Area newspaper audience wants to read about baseball.
But it doesn't mean because he writes mostly for his audience that he doesn't know or cover college football. He does cover college football for quite awhile now.

How dare him express an opinion that might differ from ours!

For those of you who say it's just his opinion , consider this:
Say you ask sportswriters to rank teams and 60 rank Team A from 1-3 and one a-hole ranks Team A at 10th.So he is either woefully ignorant or completely biased.Either way......
So everyone has to have the exact same opinion? That makes sense.
and you and all other LSU fans that will email this guy and make yourselfs look like idiots are completely unbiased right?

USC lacks depth. Alabama lost most of their defense.
LSU returns more key players, should improve at the QB position, and has probably the best RB corp in the nation. Defense will be top 5.
Voting LSU #10 is so far off the only explanation is the guy is trolling for controversy.

LSU went 4-0 regular season against those teams.
Just disgusting, but it's his opinion.
Regular season we went 3-0. Oregon, Alabama, and Arkansas were regular season. Georgia was in the SEC Championship. And Alabama Part 2 was the National Championship.

That becomes a problem is they have several key injuries, it is not in and of it self an issue and LSU is lacking depth at 1 extremely important position.

College teams always have turnover.
but I think they have 5 or 6 starters back, plus plenty of highly regarded back ups. They do however return 4 OL staters, 3 of which are projected 1st or 2nd rounders and the new guy was a 5* top 10 recruit plus their QB now has a year of experience. Oh and their coach is widely regarded as the best in CFB and has hoisted the crystal FB 3 of the last 7 seasons he's coached in CFB. Someone will pick them pretty much as long as he is there.

That's the only explanation to a biased LSU fan perhaps. But the QB has no D1 experience. LSU just lost their most recognizable if not best player and do have some potentially difficult games on the road.
Its worth noting, some people vote on how they think teams will finish, not necessarily how good the team looks on paper going in. LSU has some potentially tough games on the road. Fla and Auburn have never been easy places to play and Arky still has alot of talent plus we haven't exactly dominated them up there. Even A&M could be tricky if we get caught looking ahead to Bama, which will not be easy, even at home.
Its perfectly reasonable for people to have different opinions. CFB history is littered with "can't miss" teams that started ranked in the top 5 and finished 8-4.

You know what they say about San Francisco.........gay!
There is zero chance Texas finishes ranked higher than LSU

You miss the point. There are many reasons the vast majority of sportswriters, and coaches rank LSU so high in preseason. If it is his OPINION he's woefully ignorant of all these factors which would take too long to list here. And if he's biased it's really not an opinion but a misleading position.

When I responded to his tweet and inquired about why he voted LSU number 10 and he played dumb. He said "I noticed that too. I wonder what happened."

I was wrong H-Town Tiger, He wasn't ignorant or biased. His opinion on the ranking is apparently some mysterious event or accident.

I look at any TOP 10 in terms of what the ordering presumes about records.
Would LSU end up #10 if they lose two games, from among South Carolina, Bama and Ark?
I think so.
Before you bug Mr Ratto about his choices, look into the Dandy Don polling done every year in which 'we' predict the reg. season record. I bet 30% of LSU fans predict LSU finishes 10-2.

Let's see. An LSU team that only beat Bama because their field goal kicker sucks, needed a huge play to turn momentum on Ga, then got demolished against Bama the second round. Lost two of the biggest playes in the secondary, untested qb, and other than ODB III they are weak at WR. I can see maybe a #10 ranking until they prove otherwise

Football is a sport. The use of polls should be illegal.

ESPN also has issues with LSU. Because of Mathieu getting booted they now say LSU is #3. Wow ! If this is true, that means LSU's second teamers are #4 and 3rd teamers are #5. At least LSU has 3 of the top five spots.
