Article when he was 10 and setting national records...
quote:
The rising fifth grader at L.J. Alleman Middle School (Lafayette, La.) has broken the world pole vault record for age 10 four times this year. He first reached 11 feet, 2 inches, then eclipsed his own record in later meets by clearing heights of 12-7, 12-7 ¼ and last weekend 12-8.

The jump was Duplantis' first over 16 feet in a sanctioned competition. But it was hardly his first record-setting vault.
“Mondo," as his friends call him - “I think it came from 'Mondo' meaning 'world'… because I broke my first world record and it came with my name" - owned seven age group world records in the event by the time he was 13 years old.

Until today, Duplantis was tied for No. 9 All-Time and owned both the National Freshman Class and Sophomore Class Records.

We need that boy to become an American.

Trying in a clever way to say this is Germans?
Because if so, frick off. That shite wasn't funny 10 years ago and its worse now.
I apologize if it was already posted. Had an article dated 2-22-16 sent to me in Nashville and did some research and his big brother is in the spotlight after looking like he might get a shot at leadoff on the baseball team.

Let me just say that in 2A regionals, when I was in track, there were guys trying to qualify for state with 12-8 results. To do that in the fourth or fifth grade is just absurd.

Well I am glad I left it open as a question than...
And to Geismer, sorry no one read the thread and it was unsearchable because of your content.

Why is this kid competing for Sveden?

I would also assume he thinks he can make the main Olympic team for them easier than the US.
Can't he change once he's older and making numbers good enough for US Adult Olympic team?

Tawny is a stud. Happy we have him for 3 years

quote:Dont think that is the case for him. His numbers are #1 in the world, so he is fine either way. Most likely Sweden is willing to sponsor him far greater then the US would for pole vaulting.

#1 in the world for high schoolers right?
I'm assuming he could make the main Swedish team with those numbers right this minute, but probably not the US team.
Lets hope he changes, because the kid has barely hit puberty. When he's in peak age of 18-25 he's going to be ridiculous.

Mondo is currently 2nd in the world among youth vaulters (athletes born 1 JAN 1999 or later). An athlete from Greece is 3 cm higher.
Re: representing Sweden and the Olympics--Mondo has the 13th highest US vault this year, 1st highest Swedish vault. Much easier to represent them in Rio if he hits the automatic qualifying standard (roughly 8 inches above his current personal best) or if he is in the top 32 worldwide (currently ~35th after removing the excess French, Germans, and Americans).
A lot of federations, Sweden included, stipulate that an athlete must be a contender for a top 8 finish at the games in order for the federation to send them. However, they often make exceptions for promising younger athletes, and I'm sure they would for Mondo.
According to his father, his goals for the season are the European championships and the World U20 championships. Although it would be difficult to turn down Rio if he qualifies.
He would have the option of switching allegiance to the US, but this requires sitting out of competition and missing some international championships. The IAAF requires athletes to sit out for 2 years after changing citizenship, but I'm not sure what the rule is for athletes who already have dual citizenship. Regardless, the Swedish federation is likely to provide more financial support to a pole vaulter than would USATF.
This kid is so ridiculously talented. He is super fast and holds his pole pretty high. I wouldn't be surprised to see him take down the national HS outdoor record by 3+ inches this year. It's only gone up 3.75 inches in the past 35 years (when the elder Duplantis set the record). That's how good Mondo is.

And Mondo holds the world record for pole vaulting from a hover board. LINK Of course, SI doesn't realize this "Swede" is from Lafayette.
