To become LSU's all-time hits leader. Based on his career average of 1.3 hits per game and the fact that he currently trails Eddy Furniss by 22 hits.

With 7 more regular season games, obviously he needs 11 postseason games to get there. That would mean we would need to make the SEC tournament final or make it to Omaha or get very close to both. In other words, it doesn't look all that promising at this point.

I was curious how close he was currently and decided to look up the information. I just thought I would share in case anybody else is also interested.

Crazy. Looked like he would easily break it to start the year. Sucks

If he can get 2 hits/game that’s just 4 postseason.

I hope Furniss keeps it. Duplantis has more at bats than any other player in LSU history. Furniss was a beast. I would take one Furniss over three of Antoine. And we also wouldn’t have to hear about mondo all year

Let's hope for a few 4/4 or 4/5 games to make this interesting.

Sure. But that's kind of the point. Either he's going to have to get hot or the team is going to have to get hot or both. If the team plays like they have all season and he plays his average game, it's not going to happen.

You never know, we do usually go on a few epic SECT runs, played 6 games last year in SECT alone

Furniss finished his career as the SEC’s all-time leader in hits (349), home runs (80), RBI (309), doubles, (87) and total bases (689). In NCAA annals, Furniss finished his career No. 3 all-time in total bases, No. 4 in home runs and doubles, and No. 5 in RBI. The Nacogdoches, Texas, native -- who posted a .371 lifetime batting average -- hit .403 in 1998 with 27 doubles, three triples, 28 homers, 85 runs and 76 RBI, earning first-team all-America and all-SEC honors. He was also voted a second-team Academic all-American with a 3.5 gpa in zoology.
just to refresh.
Furniss was one of the best hitters in college baseball history

Why do you have to shite on one over the other? Why can't you just appreciate Twanie for what he's done, while still holding Furniss in high regards? Yeah, Furniss was an all-time great, but that doesn't make Duplantis' career any less awesome.

Damn, another uncheerful topic. Unless you are Eddy Furniss.

I told my wife the same thing at the game last weekend. And I don't mean that as any disrespect towards Antoine at all. But I like to see the best players keep the records. Also, I don't like to see cumulative records get broken due to more opportunities-- which is what would be the case here.

eh, kind of. Furniss had fewer ABs because he walked more. They each played 4 years and each probably had similar number of plate appearances. I wouldn't necessarily call that fewer opportunities, per se. We're really splitting hairs if we start comparing records based on number of ABs, especially if these guys have played the same number of seasons

I thought that would be the case too so I just looked it up:

Furniss - 1162 PA
Duplantis - 1150 PA and counting

That's honestly really surprising to me considering 1) our offense was much better when Furniss was here, so one would think he'd see more plate appearances, on average, each game; and 2) We went to the CWS from 96-98, and played in 4 games in the CWS each of those years. I guess maybe the difference may be that we have done better in the SECT than when Furniss was here and the NCAAT is longer and takes more games to get to Omaha. For instance, Furniss played in 4 total NCAAT games in 1995, 9 total NCAAT and CWS games in 1996, 10 total in 1997, and 9 total in 1998 (32 total). Duplantis played in 6 in 2016, 12 in 2017, and 4 last year (22 total). SO he has only 10 fewer in 1 fewer season, yet we only made it to Omaha in one of those seasons.

Regardless, when we're talking about 4 seasons of baseball with maybe only 10 or so games left to play for Dups, depending on how the postseason goes, that is really really close in terms of TPAs

Honestly, I'm just a little disheartened that the SEC record is going to be in Starkville now moreso than any sentimentality I have with Furniss holding the record.

Duplantis was also a day one starter at the top of the lineup. I'm just guessing based on the number of PAs, but it looks like Furniss hit lower in the order his Freshman year, which is pretty much what accounts for him having fewer PAs than you would think.

He did walk a ton more than Duplantis though. So far Duplantis has played in 14 fewer games.

I guess I was basing that comment off of the fact that Duplantis just became LSU's all-time leader in at-bats (obviously different than plate appearances) and he's "only" hitting .320 for his career compared to Furniss' .371 career average which is also 4th in school history (.320 is 30 points away from being in the top 10).
