This is probably one of my favorite performances of her career.

She gave that giant hell in the paint, blocked multiple shots, hit a long midrange jumper in a clutch spot, dealt with getting mauled the entire game, played like 38 minutes, and pumped Van Lith all night — including immediately after fouling out on some absurdly bad breaks.

Took the L with grace & thanked the fans on the way out.

Guess what MFers, I’m not feeling as classy this evening.

This one is worse: reviewed as a Reese intentional!

One of these players fouled out with 4 minutes, the other caught 1 whole whistle.

I hope all these refs go home to an empty house & eat microwave ramen for dinner every night for the rest of their lives. With no seasoning. Or water.

She is good no doubt but that foul at the end with 4 to go shouldn't have happened.
We needed her down low and lost without that presence.

I agree the last one was a legitimate foul — most warranted call of the 5.

Also clearly a fatigue/frustration foul. Hard to hold that one against her when it should have been maybe 3 fouls each between the two opposing centers at that point (and I’m probably being generous).

Playing 4 fouls against 1 in this kind of game is a world of a different mindset for a post player.

USA Today - Greenville

This guy is USA Today’s SEC beat writer, based in Knoxville. Not an LSU guy.

quote:

Reese clamped down on USC’s star center Kamilla Cardoso for most of the game. Cardoso and her top sidekick, Paopao, combined for just six points in the first half.

quote:

LSU couldn’t beat this opponent with its superstar on the bench. In the final four minutes, LSU missed Reese’s rebounding, her defense, her ability to muscle up buckets in the paint. It missed her mettle. If Reese didn’t foul out, you could convince me the result would have been flipped.

“Four minutes left? That’s too much time to not have Angel Reese on the floor,” LSU’s Flau’Jae Johnson said. “… Without Angel, we lacked that experience we needed.”

quote:

Officials whistled Reese for some ticky-tack fouls earlier in the game, but the fifth foul was a no doubter

Angel looked like the Angel of last season…it can’t be stated enough how much her ( and Mulkey’s) energy and leadership help drive this team. We are so lucky to have her this year and next. By the postseason, you never know how much better this team could be playing….I’m sure they gained some confidence last night.

It looked like that should’ve been a foul on Cardosa, but there there was a replay that seemed to show Angel grabbing Cardosa’s uniform with her left hand and essentially pulling her over. It seems like Angel was being pushed down and lost her balance, and the hold may have been somewhat of an effort to hold herself up. I think it should’ve been a no call, because they were both just trying to block each other out.

That picture and video show Cardosa hacking Reese very badly and she should’ve been called for a foul. I think the refs really helped South Carolina last nights.

They would have definitely won had she not fouled out.

Good job SC for getting Angel to foul out. That was the game plan all along

Don’t mind a physical game & don’t mind ticky tack games. What I mind is when one side is allowed to play bully ball but players on the other end catch a bunch of ghost fouls.

1 foul to 5 at the center position — especially if you replay Angel’s fouls vs. Cordosa no calls… story of the game.

Yes they still win if Williams is hitting at her normal clip. Yes Van Lith baited Angel into two of those questionable fouls with bad passes. Still, the game was in reach despite playing final 4m without Reese — They really deserved a W last night.

Correct.

Casual sports journalists & ESPN’s party line were that she grabbed jersey. I have watched it several times & don’t see it.
She got knocked down from behind. Maybe if she actually pulled or moved Cordosa?

We’re also just talking about 2-3 calls on Reese & one Cordosa no-call, not even going to try and count Cordosa’s over the backs.

Just one of those games. Really missing Poole/Smith probably have a good shot to finish that way even with Reese out.

I've argued for decades that a player shouldn't foul out of a basketball game.

They could make every foul beyond the 5th to give the opponent a free throw, or an extra free throw, or some additional penalty.

But to knock a star completely out of the game affects the game way too much.

And this isn't just about last night, but about all basketball games. A few cheap calls by an overeager official can completely change the game. And that's a shame.

I agree she played very strong last night but it also showed me how out of shape she is as well as others. She runs up the court only lifting her feet about 3" off the floor. Del Rosario about the same... I would figure these players would be much better in shape.

I mean not expecting them to be conditioned like Brandon Bass — she played a ton without much of a break.

I believe the last foul was out of frustration. She was getting mugged on the offensive end and no fouls were being called

Same here. Last year, I think the combo of Boston & Cardoso outsized Angel and held her way below her averages, and I thought it might happen again. But Angel outplayed the bigger Cardoso... and played as well as any game I've seen her in. And her passion made the game more enjoyable.

Not sure what to say about the officiating. It's hard to tell on TV sometimes. Cardoso was all over Angel's arms on that shot block, which should have been a foul. When Angel returned the favor and blocked a couple of Cardoso's shots, I held my breath a little because on at least one of them, looks like there might've been some contact on Angel (though she might've got the ball clean first). Some called fouls, including when Cardoso fell on Angel, did not look like fouls. Some things that weren't called look like they should've been called. Definitely affected the game.

She was definitely dead in the 4th, if you watch you could see her struggling to make it back up the floor running, her legs were gone.

Thats a tough situation because no one on the bench could come in to get her a deep breath.
